i want to mod my wrangler to do kinda fast off-roading. it’s got the 4.0, and we swapped out the throttle body so it’s up to about 190hp and 230ftlb. i would love to hit 300hp as a stretch goal, along with other mods like upgrading the cage. the issue is my dad isn’t keen on me spending his money on it. any suggestions for cheap mods, or things i can do myself? (im studying mechanical engineering and can maybe engineer some stuff)

Make lots of money. Going fast is expensive.

Add lightness. Light is fast and easier on everything.

One of the best budget speed mods is prothane coil spring inserts. Much cheaper than air bumps.

Are you looking to make the Jeep more of a Baha/dune buggy racer?

Your profile says you only have a throttle body spacer, did that give you 190 hp?or did you do a v/8 swap?

Interesting.

Haven't read of anyone going with a nitrous setup on a 4.0. Kinda curious if it would give good results. Seems to me you need low end power to wheel, and N-O would be more of a top end boost kinda thing wouldn't it?
He did say he “wanted to go fast”. Get it in high gear, 200 shot, go fast!

He didn’t say anything about doing it twice. Besides, he says he’s studying Mech-E, experimenting and failing is progress.

A larger throttle body doesn’t increase your horsepower at all. That won’t happen unless you open up your ENTIRE intake path including the manifold and the cylinder head.

There are no bolt-ons for the 4.0 that increase power other than a turbo or supercharger.

Don’t fall victim to the myths of tuning these things as you clearly have.

You want more power? Forced induction or an engine swap. I’ll also save you the time, cold air intakes and throttle body spacers don’t do anything. Neither do 4-hole injectors or any of that bullshit.

I'd also say, a go fast suspension would take priority over a go fast engine in my world.

Why is the 1999 4.0 rated at 181 in the TJ but 190 in the XJ?
