Tailgate tire mount with MORryde reinforcement

I am interested in getting rid of my rear tube bumper and tire carrier and go to a tailgate mounted option. I am looking to reduce weight out back and stop bottoming out on the rear tube bumper. I am pretty settled on the morryde tailgate reinforcement kit but I do not have a factory tire mount and it doesn't look like the morryde comes with one. I am looking for something that will keep the tire close to the tailgate and clear a bumper. I have a 06 LJ, 1" body lift with 35" tires on 15' rims with 4" backspacing. I will not go to a bigger tire size. I am also looking at the Saavy bumper or maybe the JCR bumper kit. Does anyone know which mount would be the best to get the 35" tire in and up on the tailgate?

It will work just fine with a 35". I know because I had the same setup on my last TJ.

As long as the snubbers are firmly pressing against the spare you won't have any issue at all

a little off thread but on you Saavy rear bumper did you have the receiver or shackle hooks? if the receiver is it strong enough for recovery?

With or without the MORryde? I only ask because this is probably the next thing I'm going to do as well, I just didn't know if I could put the 33" spare on the tailgate without the reinforcement? Or at a minimum, before I would install the MORryde?

With the MORryde.

You can run a 33” without the MORryde as long as you have the snubbers firmly pressed against the spare. The MORryde however will give you another level of peace of mind.

Thanks Chris. I had a swing out carrier bumper when I bought no. No stock carrier and no snubbers. Looks like I'm buying it all!

That’s the way to do it. A tailgate mounted spare is so much better than a swing away bumper.

Oh yeah! I can't wait to make the switch. I actually already removed the swing out carrier for hunting season. Running no spare currently.

Check your stock hinges for play before you mount anything.

I had my spare off Saturday when I went out and had a sidewall puncture, 7 plugs and lots of glue got me down off the trail then I lost the tire. had to buy a tire to get home (4 hours for tow) when my buddy got back with the tire I installed it and noticed it was a 33 vs a 35. ended up driving home got a discount from the tire shop as I didn't want to backtrack and get tire installed. I ordered the correct tire and will sell the new 33.

@Chris , did you have to get a different spacer for the bottom snubber or did you run it without contact there? With the spacer mine makes contact with the tire too soon and you gotta slam the gate shut.

I think it may vary from vehicle to vehicle. Especially considering the different tire widths based on brand. If I remember correctly, I played around with several different washers as spacers to find out what worked the best for my set up.

Thanks, I just remembered I’m running the offset brackets. Taking those off may take up the space after seeing some other threads that didn’t use them.
