Death wobble (don’t see anything loose)

Well, I checked my toe-in this morning. I had 3/16” of toe-out. I corrected that to 1/8" toe-in. No change. DW at 43mph in a left curve. I was already sweaty and dirty, so I disconnected the trackbar from the axle bracket and checked the bracket holes. The are straight and true and still round...

Death wobble (don’t see anything loose)

This afternoon I chocked my front tires and set my phone under the Jeep with camera pointed at the left front control arms. I hopped in and started it and then rocked back and forth against the chock. Then I filmed the right side. I’m looking for movement in the control arm bushings. I’m...

Death wobble (don’t see anything loose)

Discount Tire rotated the tires in an X pattern, and I just moved the left front tire to the left rear, leaving the right side alone. I test drove it and it’s better. It doesn’t DW every time I go over 40mph, but I’m back to square 1 because it’s still got the shakes in all sweeping left turns...

Death wobble (don’t see anything loose)

Thanks for your patience with me. I’m not the most experienced wrench… The only things that have been replaced under the Jeep are the coils, shocks, bumpstops, TREs, trackbar, and swaybar links. That leaves ball joints, draglink, 8 control arms, pitman arm on the short list. I’m sure there are...

Death wobble (don’t see anything loose)

Well I’m pretty sure I’ve got cracks in the rubber. Here is a pic of the driver side LCA bushing at the axle. Is that past the threshold for replacement? All the CA bushings look about like that…

Death wobble (don’t see anything loose)

The YouTube video that I posted at the beginning of this thread is me doing just that. I can’t see anything loose or out of order, so I posted it here to see if someone spots something that I have missed. My helper just left for college, but I’ll try to round up some friends and rock the Jeep...

Death wobble (don’t see anything loose)

The saga continues. I just left Discount Tire. They stripped the tape weights off and balanced the wheels with clip weights. My DW is worse. I can’t get the Jeep above 40mph without the violent shaking. Before today I only got DW in a sweeping left-hand curve at 43-48mph, and then usually...

Death wobble (don’t see anything loose)

Okay lots of great advice. Let me see if I have this straight: My control arms and bushings have never been replaced, and there is no good way to check them reliably, so I almost certainly need to replace them. This is probably a stupid question, but do I replace the whole control arm, or can I...

Death wobble (don’t see anything loose)

Take a peek at the video I made. I’m not seeing any movement on either end of the trackbar, the TREs, the drag link or the pitman arm. Also not seeing any up-and-down movement in the ball joints. But I’m not an expert. There is some side to side movement in the bushings of all the control arms...

Death wobble (don’t see anything loose)

Thanks Jerry. Almost everything I have read and watched has pish-poshed the idea that tires might be the culprit. The trackbar seems to be the most often accused suspect. I have an appointment this week with the Discount Tire where I bought the wheels and tires a few years ago. I booked it...

Death wobble (don’t see anything loose)

I’m trying to diagnose my death wobble. It’s not a shimmy, it’s a no-kidding, tires chirping, rattle-the-fillings-out-of-your-teeth, violent shake that doesn’t settle until I come to a complete stop. i have a 3" lift (springs, adjustable trackbar, t-case drop) and 33s. The wobble always seems...

    Drag Link Upgrade?

    Good advice, Charles. Thanks

    Drag Link Upgrade?

Sure, I’ve considered that. Your reply has me searching for answers, which is how I ended up looking at a 4 year old thread… I will probably do the work myself and offer to pay them for the time they spent diagnosing the problems. I feel pretty confident I can remove and replace most of the...

    Drag Link Upgrade?

Good question. He said that he could move the drag link with his hand. He mention that the tie-rod ends looked good (I had them replaced 2 years ago, but I hadn’t told him that). I am pretty new to doing any serious wrenching on my own vehicle. Every project I have tackled on this Jeep has...

Ham Radio install: Handheld with amp

I apologize for the late reply to some of the questions. I forgot about this write up and moved on to other things. This Jeep has been the daily driver for my two sons, and now that they are off to college, I can tinker with the Jeep again. I took a break from ham radio but I’m starting to...
