it currently is a 30, what i built is a ford 8.8 with the barns offroad truss kit. which was an amazing product. we welded the tubes and im feeling my 30 is not a total weak point. my goal is to beef up the drive train entirely before i drop an engine in. am i ignorant to the difference between the hp 30 and whats in currently?

TJs came with low pinion 30s. Still probably completely fine for you. A high pinion 30 is out of an xj and the gearset is slightly stronger in a front axle application.

ok, i will take a look. I did upgrade the gears to 4:10 with limited slip in the rear end. obviously will have to match the front end. What did the hp 30 come with as a gear set?

There were some XJ's that came with 4:10's. If you can find one cheap it would be a nice upgrade. They have gained in value recently and are harder to find. I see them in the $400-$500 range now where a few years ago you could grab one for >$100.

Good deal, I’m gonna start my research. I appreciate the advice both of you.

Back on topic. I'm just going to gusset my 30 and call it the day. Plenty of weld on kits out there. If you have doubts there are plenty of 4door with dana 30 on 35s on the trail and doing just fine.
