Hello! I have a 2001 Jeep Wrangler 4.0. I was driving and it got super hot. So I replaced thermostat, housing, and gasket. It seemed to work great for a month but than it got hot again. It will come and go. I’ve been chasing this issue for a while and don’t have the money to pour into something that isn’t the issue. I’ve heard the turbine on the water pump can break and will work sometimes and not work other times?? I also bled the air out of the system. I live in iowa and took a look at radiator and it appears it’s froze.

OK, how hot? do you have a 4.0 with the 0331 head? Inside the radiator you see ice crystals you say? If thats the case you either do not have a adequate coolant amount or your seeing the result of a mix of incompatible coolants types possibly. Re the water pump. Ive seem the impellers rot off the shaft if the system is neglected. Its either there or not as far as pumping water. if it spun off the shaft you'd heat up quick like and thats it,no in between really.

The two most likely things I'm thinking of is the water pump or the radiator. Especially if tap water, as opposed to distilled water as should be used, was been used in the radiator or it's an aftermarket store-brand radiator.
