Magnum engine questions

I used the 14" round open one listed. It is low profile so fits under the hood nicely and is available at any box auto store. Here is a pic. I had the stock 5.9L one and was going to do the cone filter right off of it, but like the old school round look better. Your engine setup looks awesome.

Holy crap. Don’t look on eBay for a Dakota v6 bellhousing…… they asking more than a used complete transmission. Over $450 for just the bellhousing. Lol. Time to start walking the upull it yards.

Yep. And they'll continue to go up as they become harder to find. Do a little more research on the NV3500 as I think the gearing was almost the same as the AX15. That would be easier IMO.

Yes it would be easier. I will go that route before I spend more than $100 on a bell housing. I have read the 3500 are loud and rattle especially in neutral. But may go that route if needed.
Looks like I may go with a set of EQ heads, a cam and refresh the bottom end. That will make a respectable HP number.
Will see. Moving in the next year is throwing a curve into my plans. Lol.

The newer EQ heads aren't as good as the old er versions unfortunately.

I honestly can't help you on the manual transmissions. When I did my V-8 swap I went with an auto so I haven't messed with them.

For a TJ we really have 3 options, they are all very similar. NV3500, NV3550 and the AX15.
All 3 are about 2” longer than my AX5. So I’m hoping with the engine swap and a longer trans I could wind up real close to my current tcase Location. It will be what ever it is, but I can hope anyway.

I'd push you toward the AX15. I have an NV3550 and I can't wait for it to die. It's not a bad transmission, in that it has good ratios and it's plenty strong. There just isn't much support for it, and it's loud.

I bought a fixture for rebuilding it when the time comes (my first gear synchro is pretty far gone) but I can't find many rebuild kits out there. I'll probably pull an AX15 and run that until my V8 hunger gets the best of me and I swap in a Ram drive train.

The ram manual transmission choices as far as I know are nv3500 and the 4500. The 3500 is about same as the 3550 only with a fixed bellhousing. Would be a tough fit to get a 4500 under a tj without a lot of compromising.

Lots of auto trans choices. Hemi would be nice, but a lot of work for a 98’.

It would be nice if there was a way to use the newer 545RFE behind a magnum. There isn't anything WRONG with the 46RE but having the added gears would be nice.

While we're on the subject of auto transmissions. Yes you can use a 44RE in these swaps if you are using the 5.2 but IMO I'd get a 46RE just for the added strength.

I'll never know for sure what did it but I burnt up the clutches in the 44RE I had in my TJ within 12 months of doing the swap. Now I'd also smoked the STaK's t-case from flat towing it. It ruined the rear output and they had to cut the case apart. So I do honestly think that the t-case going bad had something to do with the transmission going bad.

I had it rebuilt at a shop in the Seattle area. The transmission builder who built my 46RE said he could build a 44RE to handle 400HP but based on the tires size and my engine mods he recommended the 46RE which was built to handle 600+ HP.

I have not looked at a magnum harness yet. But my plan is to use the engine harness from the magnum and blend at the c103/104 ( I think) Connectors. Then add the needed additional wires to the pcm.

I have 23 years reading a specific wiring schematic scheme. The TJ is very different. Lol

Yes I was use to a different type of wiring schematic also. But you'll figure it out.

Looks like I will also need a donor tj engine harness for the connectors where the engine harness plugs in at the firewall? The 4cyl and 6cyl for my year use the same harness for the PDC harness. So I should have 6 injectors already wired there.

You can add 4 injector wires just as easily as 2.
The engine harness between a 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder are different as far as I know.

Yes the engine harness is. But the harness that runs from the pdc to the PCM and across the back of the fire wall is the same part number 4 or 6 cyl. I will have to add the needed injector wiring there as well, correct?

I'd go look at some of those videos I linked earlier or read through the thread from Jeeps Forums as it will explain better than I can. I can't think how to explain it right now.
