Husband and wife moving into a TJ

Edmonton. We've done a metric shit ton of winter camping in the Rockies/ranges along eastern B.C. so the heat of Central America is going to be difficult to cope with when you're used to -50C.

My temp swing wouldn't be nearly as much as yours and it would definitely get to me ... but I'm "old".

If you're looking for a maintenance/new parts list, I can try and get you started:

New bushings for all control arms
New Ujoints- there are 7, 5 in the driveshafts and 2 on the front axle shafts. Swap the centering yoke/ball in the front DS too.
New axle seals front and rear. The rears are a PITA. If you really want to get crazy new bearings in the differentials.
New radiator, water pump, heater core, evap core, along with all rubber hoses
New alternator, power steering pump, AC compressor, thermostat
Rear main seal, valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket
New pinion seals, front and rear
Full brake rebuild- calipers, pads, shoes, etc. Complete brake fluid flush. New rubber brake hoses.
New shocks
New blower motor
New starter
New headlight switch and "multifuction switch", also known as a blinker switch. All the aftermarket ones are absolute CRAP, so maybe just bring these as spares.
New bulbs all around
Tie rod ends
Track bar
Steering box
Ball joints

These are neither all-encompassing nor necessary, but it's most of the parts I can think of that I've ever replaced.

If only. We've done a lot of travelling in South America and a majority of the roads in towns/villages are literally not wide enough to accept a full size truck, at least not without causing damage. Would be an ideal setup however.
I didn't know you'd traveled in SA before, I assumed you hadn't. You would know better than I about fuel and parts availability!
I just mentioned Dan's trip in the above response, good timing (y). Did you ever look into his African trip? If you have, thoughts on it?

I won't have a tire mounted on the Jeep, there will be 2 mounted on the trailer. As for the fuel, it will be stored in a lockable compartment as well.

That's an absolutely fantastic map link. Will go through it in depth later tonight with my wife, thanks very much.

I've read every post on Dan's website multiple times, I'm living vicariously through him. I wouldn't be nearly as excited about an Africa trip myself- Dan seems to be very interested in cultural experiences, and I'm almost exclusively interested in high mountain passes, valleys, canyons, shelf roads, beautiful vistas, and getting as remote as possible. Africa just doesn't seem to have that- there are no big mountain ranges or valleys, and it seemed that most of his trip was driving through a flat jungle or savanna. That being said, he's a good writer and I'll read about any adventure he goes on. I'm looking forward to his Australia trip!

You're welcome for the map! I'm glad someone gets to use it. I'm always adding things to it, so more stuff may pop up. I mostly focus on dirt roads across the Andes, as well as finding the highest place I could drive to. From my research, with enough planning, a mostly-stock 4x4 might be able to drive to over 20,000ft past the Tejos Refuge. That'd be my goal if I ever make it down. I also love end-of-the-road destinations- Villa O'Higgins and Ushuaia are at the top of my list.

I've added a lot of locations from this video:
and this website: https://www.dangerousroads.org/.

What off-road stuff are you planning on doing down there?

Apologies, I blanked and forgot to reply. There’s quite a few trails in Paraguay and south Chile which look to be near perfection. I had tried to see them when I was last down but never got around to it.

By the way, your map was a big hit with my wife, she’s already begun adding her own points to it the last couple of nights so thanks again for that.

*Quick question for the knowledgeable; I’ve been attempting to contact Savvy the last week about their front bumper and ultimate steering but haven’t gotten replies from my voicemails, emails, or texts.

From everything I’ve read on here they appear to be a smaller company, would this explain that? Or have they been experiencing difficulties or shortages due to covid/supply/economy? I’m not impatient but wanted to confirm whether or not this is typical and I should wait a bit longer?

Savvy can be difficult to get a hold of. They are a small company and their primary focus doesn't seem to be on parts production. They do have very good stuff though.

Let me just add to what @Mike_H said. You may be able to ask any questions you have here and get the same answers about their products from knowledgeable forum members if something about the product is holding you up from ordering. I say this just to help you get a quicker answer and get your order in if you are in a time crunch under the new Covid consequence situation. FWIW, their stuff is the best.

Appreciate your reply. I’m trying to find out if they’ll have their front bumper and ultimate steering kit back in stock anytime soon or whether I should look elsewhere for another product.

Let me put it to you this way. From what I’ve gathered, they pretty much don’t stock many parts. They’ll make it when you order it, eventually.

Am I missing something? I’m unable to order it/add it to my cart since they’re out of stock. How do I go about purchasing it if what you say is true?

My Jeep road trips have all started out full of enthusiasms and excitement, until that moment at 3 at night in mids of who knows where, when i need to fuel up and find out that my bank account in the negative from feeding this thing fuel - that is when reality hits me.

Can you imagine being in that situation with a woman... that is hungry... on her pms... having a panic attack...

Most of their products usually say “available on back order” I see this one says out of stock. My advice is order from genright or motobilt, they both actually have customer service.

Savvy had an email me when available option and I signed up for that in November for they’re bumpers still no email. I do have several other parts from them and they are great. Cool project and and amazing adventure you have planned.
