Dropped Fuel Tank

I wasn't aware it could be modified to make it a 19 gallon tank... Honestly, I thought I had a 15 gallon tank

Well, @tr21triton says that the 4.0 has a 19 gallon tank, but since it's a 97 one never knows. The mod is very simple, and involves trimming back the vent tube on the inside of the tank. I wrote about it, with links to where I learned it, here.

if you're thinking about painting the skid plate in the future.. now is the time to do it. you got to drop the fuel tank to get the skid plate off for painting anyways, so now would be the time.

also as suggested earlier, shocks would be smart to do as the 2 mounting bolts tend to sheer off during removal and the welded in place nut is nearly inaccessible with the tank in place. you got a helluvalot more room to work with a Dremel if the bolts break during removal like 90% of them do.

differential oil change is way more accessible too 🤷‍♂️ though it can be done later on. just simpler with more working room.

I ordered a new skid plate because the original one has rot and is damaged in some spots.

I just used the polyurethane bushings . on shocks there's many threads on here but opinions on shocks are like assholes.... every one is the same but different, if you know what I mean ! but the ones on there look old... .but for sure dont go with the cheapest no-name on e-bay. you say it's driven mostly on road so you dont need the best high performance ones out there IMHO

I'm looking at a set of Bilstien shocks.

If you have any thoughts of installing an aftermarket rear bumper now is a good time. They usually add more bolts near the recovery points and the other side of the cross member is concealed by the tank and skid.

The details and videos in that thread apply to later models. Our 97 tanks don’t have that same float design. See the link I posted earlier, which has pics of the simpler, ping-pong ball style float for earlier models.

I started watching that video and thought to myself I don't remember seeing any of this on our tank. Anyhow, thanks for the follow-up.
