Today my son and I dropped the fuel tank on our 97 TJ, to replace the fuel pump assembly. Any suggestions on things we should address or replace while the tank is out? We're also now going to replace the rear shocks and service the rear.

I just used the polyurethane bushings . on shocks there's many threads on here but opinions on shocks are like assholes.... every one is the same but different, if you know what I mean ! but the ones on there look old... .but for sure dont go with the cheapest no-name on e-bay. you say it's driven mostly on road so you dont need the best high performance ones out there IMHO

Have any issues with fuel spitting out when filling? If so fix that.

That was the reason I dropped the tank on my 97 recently. While it was out, I wire wheeled rust off of every place that was normally blocked by the tank. Also wire wheeled the skid, and coated it inside and out with rust preventative.

Welcome to the forum. In my signature is a thread all about the 97 models. If you discover any quirks along the way, let us know and I will add them to the list.

Oh, while you have it down, you could check to see whether you have a 15 gallon or 19 gallon tank. If the former, it’s a very easy mod to open up those other 4 gallons.

if you're thinking about painting the skid plate in the future.. now is the time to do it. you got to drop the fuel tank to get the skid plate off for painting anyways, so now would be the time.

also as suggested earlier, shocks would be smart to do as the 2 mounting bolts tend to sheer off during removal and the welded in place nut is nearly inaccessible with the tank in place. you got a helluvalot more room to work with a Dremel if the bolts break during removal like 90% of them do.

differential oil change is way more accessible too 🤷‍♂️ though it can be done later on. just simpler with more working room.

I wasn't aware it could be modified to make it a 19 gallon tank... Honestly, I thought I had a 15 gallon tank
