Stereo upgrade in 2004 TJ

Kicker has a great line-up here, look into there 6.75" subs, just Google. Great fitment in the stock console and gives you a lot of power for what you get. Pair of with a nice amp and you'll be happy.

Since you already purchased a 4 channel amp you would need to buy another amp, or return the 4 channel for a 5 channel amp.

+1 on Infinity and even Polks. Wish @Chris would update the sticky that recommends Polks to the new wave of speakers that are other there.

Some 5.25" actually play lower than 6'5", and I would go as far as saying that a bunch of 5.25" speakers will produce enough Wrangler TJ bass when paired with a subwoofer and a good front stage.

Send me the links to all the speakers and I’ll do that 👍

Without an amp, you'll be unimpressed with the sound level if you have the top down or the doors off, etc.
I upgraded to double-din, added the Polk 5.25" in the dash, w/ tweeters above, Polk 6.5" in the sound bar thinking it would be 'good enough'; it wasn't.
I ended up adding an additional pair of 6.5" in the footwells, a small amp under the steering column, and an 8" powered sub under the drivers' seat.
Now it finally sounds good enough that you can turn it up to hear it on the freeway when the doors and top are off.
It won't win any competitions, but it sounds 1,000 times better than the factory setup.

thank you. Can you share a picture of the tweeter mounted above the Polk 5.25" Thank you!

I recently put a Kenwood single din in mine, along with the Polk speakers and I am very happy. I went with Kenwood as they have the most RMS power of the major brands, so at 22W it is plenty loud for me. Can it be louder? Yes, but more $$$. It's just like your Jeep. What are you wanting out of the system and what type of music do you listen to?

thanks again. I have not seen how folks are putting the sub in the center console. I know they come from the factory that way but have not seen any aftermarket consoles for that purpsoe.

SO....started as a little upgrade and now the whole system is going and being replaced. Ended up with a Kenwood x705 head, JL Audio Amp 75 x 4, new Polk Audio speakers up top (DB522) and in the dash (DB5252) with select increments dash pods, the dash will have the benefit of added tweeters on the dash. The base will be a Sound Ordinance 8" self powered unit in the center console to round out the bass. Struggled with how to deal with the bass but there are many good reviews for the SO unit for us classic rock, country, jazz listeners...

In for about $1,300 as of now and a full day of install I am sure. I am sure this will be a meaningful upgrade from the 18 year old stock system...

Thank you all for the friendly advise will post some pictures of the install to help others and my thoughts on the sound when complete.

I agree. I usually only listen to mellow, current event type music in my Jeep. So relaxing for me.

I am 62 and installed a 7" touchscreen stereo to get the backup camera and apple car play. I didn't use an extra amp. I bought new speakers for the pods since the jeep is 16 years and lots of people say the stock speakers are garbage. I installed one new speaker and compared it with the old ones and found the stock to be noticeably better. So I left the stock ones in place. Since I have a soft top, it gets pretty loud at highway speeds, but I get all the power I need to hear music / news while I drive. I don't have enough power to annoy other drivers at stoplights with my bass which is fine by me.

damn I jus turned 62 went with the alpine cde143bt I only stream,,,,infinity's 5.25 front an overhead, my sub was blown so I tried q/tek one ,,waist of $100 bucks.so I got a boss 8 on a flash sale on amazon now it sounds amazing top on or off and the sub fits under the drivers seat tight...I'm surprised with the boss sub it thumps an looks like quality stuff, never really tried boss before always alpine or pioneer...

Question. Car all apart…project underway and done tomorrow. The old plug from the stock sub in the center console, since I am putting in the SO self powered unit do I need to do anything with that plug? It has a lot more wires connected to it than the sub???
can I just tuck it away somewhere and forget about it?
thanks

The best write up I have seen was on another forum, but check this out. This guy went all-in.

http://www.jeepz.com/forum/accessories/22414-subwoofer-inside-jeep-wrangler-rear-seat.html

@Chilidawg keep in mind the pics for that write up are for the newer tj seat whereas the instructions linked in that write up are for the early tj seat.

i ended up using the dims for the bottom panel where the subs mount off of the pdf linked and used cardboard to make template for the rest since I needed the box to be deeper for more air volume.

took about 5-6 hours to get a sealed box making my own templates.

Thanks for the link. It doenst look like too bad of a project. I also like the single subs that mount under the driver seat, only thing is that is the low point of the Jeep so any water gets in and that could be bad.

Not looking to tackle a project like the one linked above (subwoofer under the passenger seat), and I have the Bestop Concealed Carry Security draw under the drivers seat. And I use the rear 'trunk' space so not doing what @TheBoogieman did.. that's a big commitment. Is there enough room under the passenger seat with the jack there? Or, do I have to find a center console arm rest that was subwoofer friendly and go that route?

it depends. easiest would be to have a powered sub under the rear seat. my old kicker HS8 fit under the backseat no problem.

I have a small amp under the passenger seat, but not enough for a sub. Simplest would be to get a subwoofer center console and add a 6.75" kicker in there. I have a Tuffy center console but have my own box to hold a shallow mount 8".

You could also stuff a self powered sub in the center console or under the rear seat with a quick disconnect in case you ever need to remove the seat and sub.

10" Cerwin Vega vpas10 fits in the center console quite nicely, is self powered, and still leaves the half of the console above the hand brake free if you want to fashion a small storage area

I added a 8" powered rockville sub like $109 with amp kit included. Revised to a newer jvc single din bluetooth deck. Played with power and gain settings and eq features in the dash unit and am now extremely pleased with how it sounds. I was very impressed with just how much bass that powered sub produced. Its literally the size of a amp and fits under the back seat. I horse traded with a stereo shop owner buddy for the deck. Have around 125 in the speakers and 110 in the sub the deck is about 150 bucks. Really impressived for the money spent and how it sounds so far. Still wanting to.build pods for my doors but it lower on the list now
