Buying a used Jeep and looking for any red flags / opinions

Can't say I'd be completely dissuaded by the pics, but I'd want to know more about that frame repair job.

How much is the seller asking? I'll guess $9k.

Frame repair is self evident. They only scabbed over the damage, and further encapsulated any current and future moisture from being able to vacate the frame rails. That frame is a disaster waiting for the right pothole to unleash it's fury.

How much are they asking? yeah... That would be a parts only rig in my book...

dont get discouraged, just look down south and get you a clean one then when you get it back home take steps to preserve the frame so rust doesn't get started and it will last you forever. dont be afraid to take a trip south to find a rust free one. what are you looking for and what is your price range ?

So, in a perfect world, I want a 60th Anniversary (which is the 2001) in Grey. Price range, I guess I'm flexible on that!

Another rust opinion survey met with predictable WTJF responses according to user location. Yes, the frame has obviously been patched but ffs the body mounts are still hanging in there. Top of the fenders aren't obviously bubbled, rotted. Pics don't reveal the situation below the Joop stamping or below the tail lights. If y'all are going to pick on rust, at least point out the brake master cylinder reservoir looks to be low and filled with Coca-Cola.

What are OP's budget and expectations for a TJ?

  • Why was the frame patched and does the seller have pre-repair pics?
  • Which frame patch panels were used- Pocono Metal Craft and Saf-T-Cap are the most popular US brands. Plenty of import brands, and DIY fab is common, too.

At $9k I'd be more inclined - asking $13k!

Yeah, Let’s sell him John Coopers, we will split the money.

Would be a great candidate for a frame swap since the body and everything else look so good

...if there weren't hundreds (thousands?) of other TJs out there for $13k with a good frame already.

Good responses here for sure. Fighting rust on Jeeps in this area is a never ending fight once it gets established. I would rather buy from a drier salt free climate to minimize rust and take the risk on the drivetrain. I'd rather rebuild the engine than patch or replace the frame. As someone who has repaired my rusted frame, I should have bought from the southwest and had it shipped. 13K is a walkaway price for a compromised frame. Good luck with the search.
