Brake issue / bleeding?

I am basically finished my rebuild of my 2000. My last major issue is the brakes. I have changed the entire system with the exception of the rear cylinders, the master cylinder and booster. All lines hard and soft and front calipers etc are new.

I nave been trying to bleed them for several days now. Have run through a full bottle of fluid. Each time I bleed the pedal it feels hard and no bubbles in the hose but the moment I start it up the pedal goes soft.

Don’t see any leaks and The brakes do work a little.

Any help you can offer is appreciated.

Mark

Are the calipers installed right side up? Meaning is the bleed valve on the top?

Don't ask me how I know about this... haha.

In other words it sounds like you have the brake calipers mounted on the wrong sides. When they're on the wrong side the bleeder valve ends up under the brake line which makes it impossible to bleed all the air out. It happens all the time since they bolt up either way. :)

Yeah, Jerry is saying what I was trying to get at. I made this mistake once when I was moving too quick. I put over a bottle of brake fluid through it and absolutely could not get the pedal to be stiff even after continuous bleeding. Turns out I had the brake calipers on the wrong side, and therefore the bleed valve was upside down.

Thankfully Blaine easily identified the issue. I felt so stupid!

At least now I don’t feel too stupid, knowing that others make this mistake as well.

I guess it’s true what they say, the simplest solution is usually the right one.

It makes me feel better that I’m not alone in my dumbassness.

However this is not the first thing I put on backwards. Check this picture of when I first installed the front suspension.

Ahhh, done this myself once too! Sometimes I get ahead of myself and try to get things done too fast. That's when I forget to stop and think!

Problem solved brakes work well!

First real drive:). Steering is pretty evil, I’m going to start with and alignment and then see what it feels like thereafter.

Also a small vibration in acceleration. Not speed related because I didn’t really feel it on the highway but feeling it on acceleration. Also seemed less pronounced in 4wd then 2wd.

Thanks again for the help on the brakes!

Sounds like the rear pinion is a bit too high. It should be about 1-2 degrees lower than the rear driveshaft.

I once had a "smart" desert car builder tell me if you mounted the brakes like that, when you stopped hard it would lift the tire off the ground. There was no example I could come up with including the fact that the OEM mounts them fore and aft depending on how the steering components are done with no issues.

That said, when I built my first 609 axle from Currie using their aluminum knuckles, I did run them backwards to get room to build brakes onto the knuckle.

Not sure of your set up but if you don't have adjustable control arms and a SYE, then dropping the skid you will go.
Don’t have sye or adjustable a arms so I’ll try to put in some .5” spacers and see if it cures it. Will probably do it this weekend and report back.

Will eventually invest in more goodies but my initial goal was a rebuilt safe, solid rust free close to stock tj and then build from there. Im almost there

Btw here is a picture of her today. I have 31” tires on other wheels but they are not winters so not legal here until March 15. These are winter tires I had.

Thanks
