New engine looks different in certain places. What do I do?

Actually that's not the Vin that's the other 01 I just got for the business hold on

If your original did not have the automatic tensioner, that means it is the early one. The thing that is gonna kick your ass is they swapped sides with the AC compressor and alternator. That requires a whole bunch of shenanigans I would never pay a shop to do unless they had the complete later motor with accessory drive sitting there. Or a complete donor rig so they can see how everything goes. It is however, very doable, just not cheaply.

You had the motor in the Original photo rebuilt , but it wasn't successful, so you ordered the replacement correct? And you ordered the replacement by referencing the VIN. Seems pretty clear the replacement is different from the Original. You can make the replacement fit sure, but it will involve some extra custom work as others have said. If it were me I would look for a motor identical to the one being replaced.
Also, do you know if the Original motor was the actual motor that was installed in the Jeep by the factory? Wondering if it perhaps was a replacement. Also, have you confirmed the VIN typed onto your Certificate of Title actually matches the VIN found on your Jeep itself? I'm only mentioning this as there seems to be some confusion as to whether your Original motor was the style that actually was installed in a 2000 from the factory.

Tenth position denotes the year. The VIN has a Y which means it is a 2000 model

Which now means we have that goofy split year thing going on or it looks that way. The tensioner didn't start until 2000. That's also when they swapped the accessory drive around and they changed the cast motor mounts that bolt to the side of the block in there somewhere, likely then.

If I was looking at the VIN, I'd have ordered the same thing they did. Not sure how to square that away.

For the OP- does it have a distributer or coil on plug coil rail?

The power steering bracket with the slot tensioner is NOT from a 2000 and up. (provided this is the vehicle it come out of)

I hate when they don't respond or come back but, I think we might be on a path that explains a few things. The 2000 4.0 out of an XJ would have the coil on plug rail which would hook up to the PCM correctly instead of trying to convert something to make a distributor work. It would also have the old style power steering bracket manual adjusting idler for belt tensioning.

It would be most helpful if the OP would answer some of the questions.
Build date of around 10/99 would make it a 2000 but maybe it had a end of run motor out of a 99. The coil rail and distributor question would answer some of that.

The second picture (first picture of his existing motor) shows an ignition coil bracket bolted to the block. Wouldn't this mean it's a distributor setup?

I think he must have an early 2000 that got 1999 stuff. I really didn't think they did that on the motor change.

Update: so I've been running around talking to numerous of people until I got to this place called "The Jeep Depot" the owner explained that this year, when changing to the different set up, this is one of those cases where they was in transition and used old bottom with new heads. Or old head with new bottoms. It's one of them he said.

So now I'm investing $2100 for them to make one for me. There were only 4,000 tjs made and 4million jks. Therefore, make production wasn't really identical like they would be for 4mill.

I tell you, I get surprised every day with jeeps. From random noises, to hidden gems, to being ducked, to finding out this random setup that I thought was altered by the public. When it was the manufacturing that should've said "every tj 4.0l won't be identical IDENTICAL" lol 😆 .

After this build, my other jeeps can't wait to welcome Mustard back home. Especially knowing he's kinda a mutt. Thanks guys

Hope you get it worked out.

Just FYI, way more than 4K TJs made, closer to 1 mil.

You'd have been a lot further along if you would have just answered all the questions we asked. Now not only did you waste our time and your time, the next person that comes along with a similar problem won't be able to find the answer either. Good job.

Actually I did exactly what I was to do and was fine. This is the internet, not my business calendar. Therefore I can come and go as I pleased. I answered and asked as much as I could and got what I needed. I do come back on to update on other threads as well. I have 7 jeeps and 3 businesses. With that said, if you have nothing nice to say or any questions, you can kindly keep your comments. Thanks to all whom helped along the process. #Peaceandjeeps

Update:

The original engine this wrangler came with had the 1999 and earlier block on the bottom and a 2000 entire upper. When searching and driving to shops, the 2000 years and newer had coil packs with pulley tension on the left side of the bottom block.

Mine had the tension bracket on the right. Www.jeeppartsdepot.com
Just finished rebuilding one for me. The engine that came with mine, like many said, needed a custom built as these are rare to find. These guys have years of experience and have a massive inventory. Even they didnt have the EXACT one I had. And they had to spend days calling.

I'm glad I found them because this has been the bulk of my 32md year on this strange rock we call Earth. You guys were here for the last leg, but I was going through this for a year now.

I paid for research, paid a shop that thought they knew, thought about Ls swaps and more. I don't fixed multiple tjs in the process of waiting for this one. And now Mustard is back. Going to get the engine tomorrow and update when it's done and have free time

For all those who had patience and was benevolent, I want to thank you. As you can see, I don't have much time for my next 3years of growth to be fixed on one subject mostly. I try to fit things in when I can (as I'm writing at 1:22am pt) . I try to move fast. Hence, my long messages to try and get everything out at once.

I hope my bluntness havnt stirred the pot too much. One would say, be patient to the responders or community in general. For all you know, I could've been in the hospital and you talking about how I should hurry and write back. Just put yourself in others shoes or perspective.

Thanks again, and I couldn't have thanked you guys enough

You're not blunt enough for me.

You do understand the irony, right?

"New engine looks different in certain places. What do I do?"

Apparently his answer was to be combative, argue and not give info we needed to help, then call a junkyard for another motor, lol.

he was even told what motor was in it.....
