While checking the jeep for the tick. I noticed right where the transmission meets the oil Pan I could feel air blowing. Is this normal? I am including a photo of the spot. Btw I was removing the spark plug from each cylinder to see if the noise was different to partially rule out piston slap. On the photo you can see the lip of the transmission you can feel air coming from.

Yes that’s a rear main seal leak. Pretty common and very easy to fix (if pulling a trans out is easy, then it’s easy to get out and pop a new one in)

Does that explain the air that I feel shooting from the lip? Also would that explain a tic that I hear? I can’t tell if it’s piston or lifters or I heard wrist pin can have a similar sound

Yes the fly wheel moving will be the reason to the wind so I wouldn’t worry about that. As for noise it’s hard to say or help narrow down from here. Lifter tick is very common for the Jeeps and my 2.5 has a little as well.

So would the air be caused by the rear main seal leak or the flywheel? I know there has to be a oil leak because I’m having to constantly feel it up.

No the leak is un related to the air. The air is fine and not an issue at all. The real main seal would just be replaced

Do you have a video of the noise? We’re just guessing at this point. It’s doubtful the that the flywheel is making a noise but if you post a video we could have a better chance of getting to the root of the problem. I just rebuilt my 2.5L for a ticking noise that turned into a knocking noise after a while. My problem was a broken piston.

Did you drop the oil Pan to find the rest of the piston? I might want to drop the Pan. I just included a couple of videos.

I did and could see the broken skirt from underneath. Thankfully I didn’t run it long after it let loose and was able to salvage the block

Mine sounded a lot different than yours. This is inside the engine bay. Before it started knocking it was just a consistent tap that would change with engine speed and be almost inaudible when warmed up.

Hmmm. It might be because I took it while driving. Maybe I should drop the Pan and look. Although I do not know what to look for other than chunks of metal in the pan. I tried disconnecting the spark plug on each cylinder but could not really talk much of a difference. I just feel it’sa piston slap. 237000 miles on this little 4 cylinder…hmmm

Well I’m no good at rebuilding an engine. So to pay someone to rebuild here would be a little over 4k. I can get a reman for 2k. So even knowing that I’m on the road for a reman would it hurt to ride into the block is ruined? Because a reman includes a new block. Right?

A reman will be a new block and head minus accessories like alternator, intake, exhaust etc. if you want to get money back for a core charge the block needs to be rebuildable or you usually have to pay an extra $400-$500 from what I’ve researched. Even if a piston explodes in your engine it can generally be machined to the next size piston and then they use larger pistons in place of the stock sized ones.

This was my first time rebuilding an engine so anyone can do it. Just takes time and patience and lots of research and a few specialized tools
