Any advice? Using a caliper to measure from nut to top of pinion ….mark all points …..count threads….check torque before loosening nut….try not to mangle the criush sleeve?

Dana 44 uses a shim, not a crush sleeve. Remove the pinion nut and yoke. install new seal. reassemble and torque to spec.
If you want to be real anal about it, you can mark the pinion nut and pinion at the 12 oclock position and count threads, but its not really necessary.

Dana 44 pinion nut torque spec is 180 ft lbs minimum.

I wonder if replacing and just torquing to spec, how important it would be to use a new pinion nut?
