Early 80's high school crew

I had to laugh... had him stop by for beers one night to introduce him to the OG VH and blew him away with the different, original sound.

that's funny, it really was two different bands, & I don't know of a band that's ever gotten better with a change in lineup particularly with such a critical change of the front man, it's like ripping off a limb & getting better with a sown on cadaver part. The original got your attention like a punch in the nuts. Maybe it was because I was a kid when it all started & these guys were rock gods I was seeing in real time, or maybe I'm just still bitter

Definitely 2 different bands/sounds, and while I certainly didn't hate the new sound with Sammy and do like it, personally, I prefer the original.

I forgot that I'd actually seen them 3x. First was in 2005ish with Sammy and the other 2 times with Dave. The second time I saw them (guessing 2012ish), the opening band wasn't published and when we got there, it wound up being Kool and the Gang. Talk about an ineresting pairing...! While I probably wouldn't go to a show specifically to see them (Kool), they put on a heck of a show and were pretty darn good!

Though I'm sure some would argue, putting Brian Johnson in place after the loss of Bon Scott didn't hurt AC/DC one bit. Did they get better with the change? Well...maybe. That's a tough one, IMHO. I like both a helluva lot, but maybe favor Johnson a tad bit more than Scott.

While we're talking about Van Halen:

When someone says they drive a Renegade, I think of these. Not the new compact car they released.

"We like to drink... we like to screw... we are the class of 82".

Music in the 80's moved to image over content. This was the beginning of record companies choosing band member on their image/looks over their ability to play the instruments. Some good stuff still came out but the slide that ended in the early 90's with Grunge started when MTV started.

This was largely a lost decade for me. Some of the speed metal stuff is where I existed until Grunge. Tygers of Pan Tang , Riot (not to be confused with Quiet Riot), Priest, Y&T, Triumph and a few others were my go to's in this era. The hair bands were decent to listen to were Queensrÿche and Dokken. I really liked a the bands Badlands and Hurricane in the late 80's along with Extreme, The Cult and Kings X.

I was a massive Van Halen fan, they pretty much owned the early 80s, then somewhere around half way through they had their falling out & Diamond Dave left (or was jettisoned, I'm still not sure) in favor of Sammy Hagar & shit was never the same. As much as the band was Eddie Van Halen, Roth was its spirit & personality, I've never seen anything like it before or after him, got to see their Fair Warning tour in 81 and Diver Down in 82, simply amazing stuff, Roth was in a league all his own & he's still nuts to this day, in a good way. At that point & into the early 80s I had seen some awesome front men between Mick Jagger, Roger Daultrey, Paul Stanley, Steven Tyler & many others, & Roth blew them all away. Van Hagar had some really good music, I appreciate it a lot more now then I did then, I was pretty butt hurt about Roth being gone & figured they'd just suck after that.

Anyway a few of Roth's gems after leaving VH, same energy, same 80s vibe

skip to 1:30 for Dave's entrance

a couple great covers

During my early college days I worked for the Pavilion on BSU's campus as security for concerts. VH came through at the end of their 1984 concert tour and were nearly booed off the stage. Roth came out and did his typical jump off the drum riser as they kicked in with Running With the Devil... He landed in a puddle of his own puke(he'd puked just before the song started) and twisted his knee. The song was barely recognizable. He went back stage and Michael Anthony played a horrible bass solo while they patched Roth up. He returned to the stage with a bottle of Jack Daniels in one hand and a young lady in the front row yelled at him asking if it was real.... he took a mouthful and blew it right over my shoulder in her face and yelled "how's that for real". He then asked Eddie if they had ever been to Boise before... he wanted no part of this banter and just played a little riff. Roth then said he thought they had and it's nice to see that Boise had indoor plumbing now... That resulted in Van Halen merchandise many had just overpaid for being thrown on stage.

So... yeah... he was absolutely a shitfaced drunk and it's one of the worst concerts I ever saw. The "wall of sound" set up was a pile of crap and sounded like half of it was blown. No chemistry at all on stage.... just going through the motions. The end of the Roth era was rough.

I like VH but was never a rabid fan. After that night I welcomed VanHagar.

Got ejected from their concert at Cardis in Beaumont, Texas due to my buddy egging on the lead guitarist in a vulgar fashion. She was all into it, then this really big bouncer put his hand on my buddy’s shoulder and said “You gotta leave” and we didn’t argue.

Yeah... we ejected tons of people who went after the opening acts all the time. There were a few asswipe "rock stars" I wish we could have asked to leave. Aldo Nova is one such azzclown.

Rammstein was way better at the show
Love their music but can’t understand a word they’re saying. Same thing with Loudness. An Asian co-worker introduced me to them. Loved the music but no matter how much I tried, just couldn’t sing along.
