Strange vibration

A few months ago I started to get what seemed like vibration from unbalanced tires. I had about 30k on a set of KO2s so I took it in and had them rebalanced. That seemed to make no difference. What was strange was the fact that some times the vibration was there and sometimes it was not. Over the next few thousand miles it got progressively worse but it was still quite tolerable. I figured I would just have to buy a new set of tires to solve the problem. Well…… this last week my rear drive shaft started making noise. Not the angry squirrel type but something that was clearly not right. So I took the drive shaft out and the noise went away. And guess what else went away? The vibration! The drive shaft universals and centering yoke feel very good when moved by hand but clearly something was wrong in there. So I have ordered a new shaft from Tom Woods and when I get around to it I will rebuild this one and put it on the shelf. Is it just my imagination or do TJs just eat drive shafts?

This post is just chatter- But looking at our collective experience I don’t think they do worse than anything else as a whole-

But these are probably the most modified vehicle sold, and things like an uncentered rear axle introducing a 3rd angle, regear vibes and sharp angles do enter in.

And they do see some abuse.

The general rule is the flatter the driveline the longer the life.

Keep us posted how it works out. A lot of us would be glad to trade you our driveshaft for your turbo set up.

That’s kind of like saying I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous. Hmmm.

Ha ha, no trade! But what you said got me thinking. Do you suppose that the extra 100+ hp I have at the wheels has anything to do with it? I know that the torque output of the engine exceeds the torque rating of the NSG370 transmission.

Well I didn’t want to bring that up- I didn’t want to seem like I was bashing-

But remember everything is sized to work together.

I’ll give you an example- My brother kept going through U joints years ago so he went and got some extremely good racing you joints- And twisted a shaft - like a twizzler. With an inline 6.

You’re probably putting out some good torque numbers- for an f-250.
