A few months ago I started to get what seemed like vibration from unbalanced tires. I had about 30k on a set of KO2s so I took it in and had them rebalanced. That seemed to make no difference. What was strange was the fact that some times the vibration was there and sometimes it was not. Over the next few thousand miles it got progressively worse but it was still quite tolerable. I figured I would just have to buy a new set of tires to solve the problem. Well…… this last week my rear drive shaft started making noise. Not the angry squirrel type but something that was clearly not right. So I took the drive shaft out and the noise went away. And guess what else went away? The vibration! The drive shaft universals and centering yoke feel very good when moved by hand but clearly something was wrong in there. So I have ordered a new shaft from Tom Woods and when I get around to it I will rebuild this one and put it on the shelf. Is it just my imagination or do TJs just eat drive shafts?
