I'm in the process of removing my spare wheel, however in the process i've realised the only thing stopping the rear window opening is the brake light/spare.

Is there a way of "locking" the rear window or is it just an accepted risk given i'm unlikely to ever have much of value in there?

It should if it's adjusted correctly.
That's why you're supposed to close window before the tailgate.

Aww, it was more fun when I thought all of you guys were wrong. But I was misremembering. Once I actually went out in the 20° weather and looked, I saw that tab hanging down behind the tailgate.

Cheers everyone. Mine's a '98 so i'll have a look. I've never noticed a locking mechanism, but then i also very rarely remember to lock the tailgate!

Just to be clear, I don't think anyone means that locking the tailgate will secure the glass. We just mean that the tailgate, when closed properly, holds the glass in place. If yours doesn't, perhaps post some pics?

Tailgate holds the rear window closed. Not sure if you can call it secure though

Not an actual lock on the window.
The tailgate is designed to hold the glass.
Locking the tailgate keeps it secure.

so on a soft top you can just unzip and open the window ?

Yes, you can unzip it and it will fold down / flop over the the back seat. But if you want to remove it entirely, you have to open the tail-gate so that you can remove the lower portion of the rear window.
