Your 4-banger coolant and thus the heater core runs at the same temperature as the 6-banger does. Is your temperature gauge indicating the normal 195 (in really cold temps) to 210 degrees or did someone like a previous owner stupidly remove or replace the factory specified 195 degree thermostat with a 165 or 180 degree thermostat? Maybe you just need to replace your thermostat with a fresh 195 degree thermostat. If you replace it make sure NOT to buy any that are labeled "fail safe" which can just cause problems like the engine running too cool.

Jerry Thanks, It runs 195 ~210 It wasn't that bad today its colder out but less wind. I was comfortable with the heat on.
 
When I bought my '90 YJ I asked the salesman about the heater (I'd never had a convertible before). "It'll drive you outta there" he said. The man was not joking. With the 4-banger, half doors and a soft top, I couldn't run the heater or defroster at full-tilt. It's freaky how well the heaters in these things work.

They work great until you have to replace the heater core, then it's just a crap shoot of how much heat you can get.

We're -8 degrees here (feels like -18 with wind chill) in Colorado.
Mine gets TOASTY inside.
I just crank it up, let it idle in the garage for about 10 min, and she's ready to roll.

How long is it taking your temp gauge to reach operating temps?
you might have an underlying issue.

LMAO. I'm actually in Colorado Springs.

One time it froze like this, and I was hitting my moms fabric patio chairs with a hammer thinking I was "breaking ice". I was young, probably 15 or 16.
Next day when it thawed out, the chairs were SHREDDED. That's the day I learned not to play with flexible materials in the cold.

Needless to say, I haven't even as much as thought about touching my soft-top. :ROFLMAO:
 
A few years ago I was on 285 between Jefferson and BV and it was -22. I had a soft top but that was the one time where I was chilly in my TJ going down the hwy with the heat on full blast.

I got pretty chilly yesterday, but it wasn't the TJ's fault.
My soft 1/2 door top seal was gapping from the door @55mph.
I couldn't figure out where the cold breeze was coming from.

Pulled over, gave it a hard tug, and it's sealed like a sardine can now. lol.

yeah. I knew of the risk when I lived in Colorado Springs, and later Monument, so I kept the hard top my Jeep came with and put it on around the first of every December until May.

I sold the hard top when I moved to OK. It gets cold here (I haven't seen double digit temps since Saturday) but it's rare enough that if I'm gonna need to open a window, I just drive something else. It's supposed to be back up into the 50s by the end of the week.

I have to agree with the Germans, "There is no bad weather, only bad clothes." Four poppers take a bit longer to warm up but once they do they are just fine. Y'all acting like a bunch of Cheechakos. This was Jan two years ago, not so bad here this morning at 4f.

Do you run thinner oils or different coolant ratio up there? Any other cold weather tricks like a grill cover?

I usually run 10w30, coolant at 60/40 and plugging it in(block heater) at night. If I was in Fairbanks I would probably change that strategy some as the amount of days at below zero are much greater than here on the Kenai. I also run an electric fan which helps a small amount with warmup and you just spend a lot of time letting it idle to keep things warm.

I noticed the sign- if you are a builder in that area you really have my respect- we have an artic front coming through and no one showing up- one guy and me working today.

I’d have a tough time making it up there man.

about 10 minutes driving and its at temp, after driving a bit and checking the center vent temp with fan on high 138 degree. The wind was my enemy on saturday. 13 degree tonight and the heat was keeping up with the conditions.

Hmm, i'm not sure.
Mine heats up in about 10 min at idle in the garage, and my heat blows about 130 as well at the vent.
I've been super toasty, even during the sub-zero temps the last few days.

Maybe you've got a little air-draft somewhere inside, sucking all the warmth.
