I am 50% Norwegian and raised in North Dakota.

I think that's more about the rural nature of the area, rather than the ancestral origins of the settlers. There are two reasons rural folks kept junk around. 1) there is no trash service, and 2) it's a long way to a store, so you learn to improvise when you're in a bind. My junk pile has saved me more times than I can remember!

Drive around Alaska and it's extremely common for the reason that it costs money to get rid of it.
