A/C low pressure switch woes

a couple weeks ago i hopped in the jeep (eugene) on a warm day to make a run to town and noticed no cold a/c.

local shop recommended by a coworker checked it out and said no doubt it needed a new compressor.

was not sure that i believed this mechanic so i spent a few minutes later in the day troubleshooting by jumping the low pressure switch plug with a paper clip and came to the conclusion that hopefully a low pressure switch might be all it needed since the compressor kicked on.

parts store had to order a new low pressure switch which i picked up and replaced old with new yesterday after work. lucky for me the a/c is blowing cold again.

just another reason to fix your own stuff as not everyone can be trusted. $35 low pressure switch and a few minutes of my time for the win.

The ability to troubleshoot & do at least preliminary diagnostics is vital. Even if you're not able to do the work yourself, being able to rule out some simple things before handing it off to somebody else can potentially save you a ton of money.

There's probably not a good answer to this, but what would the shop have done if they replaced the compressor and then discovered that it still didn't come on? Would they have then rolled up their sleeves to figure out the real issue? And then what would they have told you they did? I'd love to have that conversation with the girl at the counter.

Shop: "we also had to replace your low pressure switch"
Me: "so the switch was bad?"
Shop: "yes"
Me: "did you test the old compressor after you changed the switch?"
Shop: "..."

Things would probably escalate from there.
 
After the replacement of the compressor; the shop would then state they found another part that required replacement in the repair process (most vehicle owners would just accept this not knowing any better).
The few that may question the shop; would receive a BS statement that most vehicle owners would accept.
It’s difficult to find reputable shops and honest technicians.
