Well I knew this would happen...driving my 06 Rubi today I noticed a cherping noise coming from the shift boot area. Going to the store it was first noticed, I thought it was, Speedo, blower , opd, etc. Driving home it got louder. It stays constant in pitch but slows as rig slows. It doesn't disappear when clutch is engaged so maybe not TO bearing(?). I don't drive it that much in winter so it was the first time I had it out in a while. Fluids were checked in the fall and there isn't a puddle or sign of leakage.....I guess the Tremec swap may be sooner than later. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks DJ

Could be the centering ball on the front driveshaft. Do some research on a sound referred to as "angry sparrows."

Thanks for the advice, I will pull the front shaft and give her a drive, a new front shaft will be cheaper than the trans swap. But I will do it at some point. Silverstate has sales on the kit now and then. I will just get it and do it, and sell the NSG.

This.

After chasing the issue, thinking brakes and bearing hubs, yes, it was my DS too. Put it in neutral while coasting slowly and/or jack up the front end and spin the tires.

Meanwhile, I'm keeping that Tremec info handy. For when my NSG370 shits the bed.

i would recommend not driving it any more until you've pulled the front shaft and at least made sure that isn't the source of the noise. The angry sparrows in the centering ball are usually a warning that seizing is imminent, which will explode your transfer case.

Went out and grabbed the joint to see if there is play and sure as hell there is. Just ordered a new shaft from Tom Woods. Thanks for the help fellers!!

I'll give you a heads up on pricing for the Tremec.

Yes, just pull the front DS and carry on until the new shaft arrives.

Mines been out for a couple of weeks, just haven't gotten around to deciding on woods or Adams driveshaft. That discussion is like Coke/Pepsi, Chevy/Ford, or synthetic/non synthetic.

The difference maker for me is that TW has a presence on this forum and regularly participates in relevant conversations, going above and beyond when it comes to entertaining hare-brained ideas. It's not a hard decision for me whatsoever.

Easy decision for me too. I sent in an Adams shaft for diagnosis and repair and it came back with a bad ujoint. That kept me chasing my tail for six weeks trying to find the problem. Anecdotal, but frustrating.

I have looked at both sites but it's been a while. I will have to start over. If I recall correctly there was something appealing about both of them but forum participation is a good thing.

Why a new driveshaft? That CV joint can be rebuilt for a lot cheaper. When I started hearing those "angry sparrows" I took the driveshaft to a driveline shop and had them rebuild the CV joint with a greasable centering ball. Yes, it is a pain to grease that thing but as much as I use the Jeep I only have to do it once a year. But as long as I keep maintaining it, I doubt I'll ever have trouble with it again.

With as much lift as @Viking Jeeper has, if he’s running a stock shaft he should get an Adams or Wood’s shaft simply for the increased spline engagement as well as for longevity/reliability. The length won’t be much more, but the engagement will be.

Tremec makes a 5 Spd kit with TR-4050 trans, 6.16, 3.11, 1.71,0.76 with a 6.03 reverse. Kit includes everything for swap and the last quote I got was just over 5k, we shall see how close that route is now.

Need to drive one before buying. I was disappointed. If it was me, AX15.
Also 4th in 4050 is 1:1
