Hello, I own a ‘98 TJ. It’s my first Jeep and I’m really enjoying owning and learning about it. I try to do most of the work myself. This is also my first post on this forum. I’ve taken advantage of a lot of great info here so to everyone who knows this Jeep model and shares your wisdom, thank you!
I have an issue that I have read about extensively but none of the solutions previously provided (that I know of) have helped me solve it.
My Jeep won’t crank with the key. The first time it happened, I shut it off, turned the key to the on position, wiggled it and it started. Every time since, nothing.
All electrical systems power up in key “on” position. Turn to start, nothing.
With key on and Jeep in neutral, it will start with screwdriver jumping the solenoid.
To date I have replaced the ignition switch, the actuator pin, PCM relay #9. #2 40 amp fuse in PCM is good and meter shows power with key on. PCM relay shows power with meter in 30amp slot, with the #2 40 amp fuse in place.
I checked downstream O2 sensor, connection is good with no visible damage to wires.
Clutch position sensor was disconnected already when I bought the jeep, I’ve never needed to engage the clutch to start the jeep.
Obviously I am missing something. I replaced my terminal heads on the battery, have excellent connections and a new battery.
Jeep runs great no issues once it starts.
I really miss turning the key to start it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

What did the electrical wire vonnector on the back side of the ignition switch look like? I am thinking that your problem is up there.

Pretty clean. I didn’t notice any discoloration or obvious issues, but I will re check, is there anything specific that would be an indicator of a problem?
