Danish shipping giant Maersk's share price plummets over 3% as Dali that carrying 4,600 20ft containers

The Dali container ship had undergone 27 inspections since 2015, and it had been found to have two 'deficiencies', according to a CNN review of records from the Electronic Quality Shipping Information System (Equasis).

Notably, this included a June 2023 inspection in San Antonio, Chile, where a deficiency was found in the 'propulsion and auxiliary machinery' - with propulsion faults also noted in the early CISA report.

The Dali was also involved in a 2016 incident at the Port of Antwerp. A review in November of that year in Antwerp, Belgium found another 'deficiency' in its 'structural conditions.'

No deficiencies were found when the vessel was last inspected on September 9, 2023 by the US Coast Guard in New York.

All activity out of the Port of Baltimore, one of the most important trade hubs in North America, has ground to a halt.

The ship had departed the Seagirt Marine Terminal at around 12:30am Tuesday, before turning southeast towards the bridge around half an hour later.

The Dali was intended to sail underneath the bridge, however it struck a support beam. Investigations into the accident are still ongoing.

Observers said that black smoke was seen emanating from the ship in the moments beforehand, suggesting the crew may have attempted to reverse its engines.

All activity out of the port has been halted. Around 30,000 people use the bridge to commute every single day, leading to mass disruption in the area.

Last year, the port handled a record amount of cargo, and it registered as the 20th biggest port in the nation by total tonnage, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

The port is noted for catering to large container ships like the Dali. The 948-foot-long vessel had reportedly spent two days in the port before its departure around midnight Monday, and was on course for Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Last month, Maryland Governor Wes Moore praised the port's handling of large cargo ships, saying it 'continues to demonstrate Baltimore's capabilities of handling supersized vessels.'

Around 40 ships are currently on course for the Port of Baltimore. Georgio Hatzimanolis, an analyst for ship tracker MarineTraffic, said the accident may impact supply chains.

'We do expect there to be a ripple effect, but it’s a bit too early to say what the impact will be,' he told the New York Times.

Construction crews were performing 'routine' concrete repairs on 47-year-old Baltimore bridge when ship Dali slammed into concrete pillar causing it to crumble in SECONDS - sending eight workers into river with six still missing

Construction crews had been performing concrete repairs on the Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed on Tuesday morning, officials said.

Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said that eight workers had been repairing potholes when the bridge was hit by a cargo ship.

Six of them remain unaccounted for following the collapse, which was caught in dramatic video as it collapsed into the Patapsco River.

Wiedefeld said: 'We know there were individuals on the bridge at the time of the collapse, working on the bridge, contractors for us.

He said the workers were 'basically doing some concrete deck repair', but said they did not know how many vehicles were involved.

A representative from Brawner Builders told NBC News that the company had a crew on the bridge when it collapsed.

Wiedefeld added that the transport authority has set up a facility for family members of those who were believed to be on the bridge at the time of its collapse.

On Tuesday, Maryland Governor Wes Moore also said that a preliminary investigation into the collapsed pointed to it being an accident.

He said: 'The preliminary investigation points to an accident. We haven't seen any credible evidence of a terrorist attack.'

Officials said they have spotted five vehicles submerged under water thanks to infrared and side-scan sonar technology - three passenger vehicles, a cement truck and a fifth vehicle.

FBI special agent in charge of the Baltimore office William DelBagno said 'there is no specific or credible information to suggest there are ties to terrorism in this incident.'

The collapse is sure to create a logistical nightmare for months, if not years, for the East Coast, shutting down ship traffic at the Port of Baltimore and snarling cargo and commuter traffic.

According to The Baltimore Sun, the Dali was setting off on a particularly long voyage of 28 days because the crew wanted to go around South Africa to avoid the Red Sea, where Yemeni Houthi rebels have been attacking western ships to protest the war in Gaza.

The ship’s crew issued a mayday call moments before the crash took down the Francis Scott Key Bridge, enabling authorities to limit vehicle traffic on the span, Maryland’s governor said.

Governor Wes Moore said the ship's crew managed to issue a Mayday before it crashed into the bridge, which allowed officials to stop cars from going on the bridge.

'We're thankful that between the 'mayday" and collapse that-that we had officials who were able to-to begin the stop the flow of traffic so more cars were not up on the bridge,' Moore added.

Joe Biden addressed the bridge collapse from the White house shortly after noon EST, saying he has spoken with Maryland officials and told them he will be sending federal aid.

'To the people of Baltimore - We're with you, were going to stay with you as long as it takes,' he said. the port of Baltimore if one of the nation's main shipping ports and we're going to get it up and running again as soon as possible.'

Biden added he has directed his team to work on rebuilding both the port and bridge 'as soon as humanely possible' and plans on visiting Baltimore as 'soon as he can.'
