I've been lurking here for a while but finally signed up today because I picked up a 01 Wrangler 4.0/5 Speed from an auction. At the auction yard I noticed it had no rear driveshaft, but I got a good enough deal on it that I don't really care. It has 4" lift springs (based on me measuring the spring), 33's, and it has a t-case drop on it.

Now comes the fun part. So far as I can tell it has a SYE kit on it, there's no flange of any kind on the rear axle. What exactly do I need to get to make this RWD again? I know I need a SYE CV style driveshaft, that's not an issue. What do I need to get for the rear diff? Yoke and pinion bolt?

I've been messing with cars forever but this is my first TJ. That combined with the fact that it was an auction car so you can't even ask the previous owner pretty much leaves my flying blind. Where should I start with this?

Your rear end is likely empty. Not just a missing yoke, but also a missing pinion. It’s probably a grenaded 35. You will have to rebuild or buy a new rear axle with the correct gearing to match the front.

Seems to be a Dana 44. I'll pull it in the shop and take the cover off tomorrow and see what's going on in there.

You are correct! I went out there and looked down in the driveshaft side of the rear end and there's nothing in it but axle shafts, no differential. I'll find me a rear end.

If it's a Dana 44 then just have it rebuilt. Good opportunity to setup your gearing properly for those tires. 4.56 or 4.88 is what you'll want.

Wasn't a rear Dana 44 part of the Sahara package? My 02 has one. Front probably 3.73 gears. 4.10s are very livable with the 5 spd and 33s but 4.56s would be better.

lol yeah I noticed that. I guess that should have been a clue huh?

Jeep looks good from a distance. Comes with a SYE, I’m assuming adjustable CA’s it looks like it’s pointed up, but it’s weird that it has a SYE, but also a TC drop. Pulling the carrier R&P weird, but now you get to build up.

I’ve seen weird before, my CJ5 came with a TC drop…they welded for good measure, then turned the Pinion at the TC but have a stick Drive Shaft. Tons of fun unraveling nonsense, ha.

Yeah auction cars are good times. I’ve wanted a TJ for a while though and this one was cheap enough, so I can’t be too mad.

You check the head? Wasn't that year prone to cracking? Although if someone tossed a SYE at it then they probably fixed everything else!

I looked and didn’t see anything, no leaks and it runs fine. Probably either got a good one or it’s already been fixed since it’s 23 years old now.
