Old Farmer stops by the mechanic to get his truck fixed
Mechanic says its the Transmission, I can't get it fixed today
No problem I leave it and walk home
On the way home the farmer stops by the Hardware Store and gets a gallon of paint and a bucket
he is walking home and sees the feed store and goes in buys two chickens and a duck
when he comes out he see an older lady and she tells him that she is lost and do you know where 1607 Mocking bird lane is
Yep sure do its right down the road from my farm but I am walkining and don't know how I am going to get there carrying all this stuff
easy she says, put the gallon of paint in the bucket and one chicken under each arm and carry the duck in your other hand
So off the go
he comes up to an alley and he says I use this as a short cut
She says I dont know I am a widow lady and you might try to take advantage of me
Look lady how would I do that, I am carrying a bucket, a gallon of paint 2 chickens and duck
easy she says you put the duck under the bucket, put the gallon of paint on top of the bucket and I will hold the 2 chickens

Looks like the machine shop found me a good block closer to me in a junkyard and the price is less than the one I'd found in Moses Lake. They are having it puled and I'll pick it up sometime next week and take it over to the machine shop to have all the machine work done. Will take all my parts from the current block over at that time also to have it checked out. The only thing I'm not sure about at this point is if I'll need to replace my current piston rings with new ones. I'll find out if I need to replace them or not.

Tomorrow I'll get the garage cleaned up and things moved around so I can bring the Jeep back inside and do some of the other work I need to do until I get the new block back and then push it back outside again.

Man that sucks Rick. Are they going to work with you on this or just shine you on?

We haven't gotten to that point yet. I did ask them if the valve springs binding could have done this damage. The machinist said that most likely it wasn't what caused this.

There are times I really would like to just throw a match into the garage... I can't catch a freaking break.

I don’t have your patience. I told my boys if I were you I would have sold the project. So, I admire you for continuing. I really don’t know how you do it. You’ve obviously been through this a lot and developed patience, though I know this is pushing the boundary. I’m trying to envision what it will be like on the trail, which is what would keep me going if I were you. It should be pretty gnarly.

If I sold it think about how much money I'd lose. Couldn't even get $0.20 on the dollar selling a non-running rig. Plus it has a lot of sentimental value for me. My daughter was 6 months old when I took her to go look at this Jeep and then from the time she was 4 to 12 she went wheeling in it every month with me. And part of what keeps driving me is the thought of getting back out there on the trails with her. Only difference now is that she has her own TJ for driving on the trails.

I'll know more next week about the new engine and when I might possibly get it. While I really wanted to go to Moab this year I also know I don't want to just slap this back together and then haul it all the way there to only have it breakdown. So I'll wheel it here locally first and then hopefully hit some of the other trips planned by members.

Is is possible to find any old running 5.9 and throw it in there, just to get it out on the trail? At least then you can shake the rest of it down while the big'un is being built.

I'm sure I could find another running engine but then I'd be buying two engines. I'll just get a good block and build a new engine.
Granted if I could find a known good running stock 5.9 it'd be nice but unless I pay a premium price for a low mileage engine it really wouldn't matter.

When I bought my core engine I only paid $50 for it but that was with knowing that it needed to be rebuilt. And when I tore that engine down it was hardly worn and the only issue with it was that it'd been ran for an extended length of time with a blown plenum gasket. So the cylinders were very carboned up.

No but them being rough installing the bearings could have been. I am sorry that this has set you back. I know quite a few of us are looking forward to seeing you out on the trail.

I've found a few mentions of the Magnum block cracking but it's not a common issue that I can find.

I really just want it done too.
