Is my rear axle bearing shot?

Any idea which retainer is the one for a '97 Dana 44 with drum brakes? I could take my junk apart and measure, but I'd rather not do all that until it's time to actually do the work.

Bolt pattern is the same between drum and disc. You should be able to narrow it down with that info.

Let's pretend I can't figure it out from the info on Rock Auto. Would be happy to learn how to divine the right part.

I guess I don't know how you guys are able to tell which one is for discs vs drums. It's clearly something obvious, but it escapes my eyes.

Disc retainers have a formed lip pointing to the inside to compensate for the difference in thickness between the thin stamped steel drum brake backing plate and the much thicker cast iron disc brake backing plate. Disc first.

I looked locally for Timken 9912S seals and the ones they showed me were not the same as the Timkens even with the same part number. I wanted to post some pictures of the Timkens and Spicer seals. Spicer on the left. Timken on the right.

Is the one on the right the one you were shown or one you found after what they showed you wasn't the same?

No, the one on the right came from RockAuto in a Timken box.

NAPA, AutoZone, O'Reillys and Advance Auto are the only parts storein my town. NAPA cross referenced 9912S and what they brought out looked like a Spicer seal. The other three stores brought out boxes marked 9912S and the seals had 9912S marked on them, all of them looked like Spicers.

The Spicer seal is manufactured by CR PN 18731. It is very common for house brand seals to be "buy as sell as" items so no surprise that you are running into the Spicer/CR seals in the box even though they have the National part number.
