Shop Pro Universal Coolant Used - Okay or not?

Hello everyone,

I recently had the water pump replaced on my 2003 4.0 by the dealer…

I should have payed a bit more attention, but after reading the bill and speaking with the service department, I discovered they used “Shop Pro Universal Coolant” (photos attached).

I guess a dumb question, but is this okay to leave in the system with it being labeled as safe for all vehicles? Or do I need to flush and fill with a true HOAT coolant?

That's more of a you question...how much time and energy you want to spend chasing perfection vs driving and enjoying the vehicle.

I typically mix a sample of coolant from any of my vehicles with an equal sample of what I'm adding 24-48 hrs before I do the work to check for geling and other bad reactions.

This is generally why I do all of my own mechanical work

Yeah, typically I do my own work and I think I just reminded myself why that is the case…

I’m not overly concerned, just wanted to ensure I’m not putting the vehicle is a compromised position by running this coolant. I have not scene any gelling or other issues in the actual radiator or overflow, so thinking I should be okay until the next time I flush the coolant.

I don’t see any issue. I ran regular green for 20 years then last year used NAPA Extended Life which is a universally compatible coolant similar to what you posted.

I've been using the stuff you posted for awhile no problems. It's the Advanced Auto or Auto Zone generic mix

I only run the mfg's recommended type of coolant - but most of my experiences are with European cars where the Prestone green isn't particularly friendly to their alloys. Big ol' cast iron block American motor I wouldn't be as concerned although there *is* aluminum in the water path. With that said, I'd thoroughly flush and change it to the right stuff "next time" and make sure that "next time" came on the early end of the recommended change interval.

What color is this coolant? Is it truly yellow or more orange? The coolant currently in the Jeep is an orange color, which leads me to believe the dealership was incorrect in telling me that’s what they used.

The invoice says “Dexcool coolant”, which my understanding is that is an OAT coolant and not compatible… what’s weird is the work was done at a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Ram dealer, so would not think they would use Dexcool.

Don't remember off top of my head. Doing some work on Jeep tomorrow so I'll go back and check. IIRC i'ts orange. I did a full cooling system & flush, heater core, water pump, ect.. a little over a year ago. Used the concentrate of that then topped off with the 50/50

More important than the brand is using the same type. Do NOT mix types. If you also stick to a certain brand of the same type, you 100% know it’s compatible. As to type….for these old Jeeps it’s not too precise. Lots of people report good results using HOAT type, Zerex GO5 brand. So I use it too. No issues. For all my other vehicles and equipment, I use Peak One Final Charge Pro. I’m sure the Final Charge would be fine in a 4.0 too. Just don’t mix the two.

I use the universal stuff in all of my Jeeps IF they've been flushed first.
