Starter not engaging

Hey guys, it's been a while. Life has kept me from wrenching on the Jeep but now that I'm getting back into things, good ol JJMP (Japanese Jeep Money Pit) has started hurling problems my way.

Scarcely a week after finally getting my driveline fixed with the SYE and Tom Woods drive shaft, the Jeep decided that "Nah, I don't want to start anymore unless you jump power direct to my sylenoid. Get wrecked." So, I've spent a while chasing down the problem and this is what I've found so far:

1. Turning the key does nothing.
2. The starter relay clicks when turning the key.
3. Pulling the relay I have constant power from one of the pins, and power at another when turning the key to start. (This, I think, eliminates the Fuse being bad and the NSS being faulty.)
4. I have constant power at the starter itself.
5. When turning the key to on, I have no power (12v) at the solenoid. So there's no power getting down to the Solenoid somewhere.

Best idea I have is that either from the fuse box under the hood, power isn't getting from there to the Solenoid or the Relay is bad despite it clicking. I'm going to test the relay tomorrow at the local Hobby Shop on the military base here to verify it's good. The only other thing I can do is find a pinout for the starter relay contacts and test continuity between that and the wire running to the solenoid to verify that the cable is good and not open. I thought about being risky and jumping the power at the relay terminals to the solenoid to see if I can get the starter to crank but I don't want to blow anything up.

Hoping that someone has some insights. I'm going to get this fixed and sell the Jeep locally on island because I'm really tired of constantly playing whack-a-mole trying to solve issues that crop up instead of doing fun things to the Jeep to make it cool.

Have you pulled the ignition switch and verified the actuator pin is intact and functional?

I haven't got to the ignition side yet. That was my next step this coming weekend if nothing else panned out. Would the relay still engage if this was faulty? When I turn the key to start, I can hear the relay engaging in the fuse box in the engine bay. If this were damaged, would the relay engage? Sorry for my ignorance, I'm still learning how everything works with cars...I suppose I picked the right vehicle to get experience.

I did swap a working relay into it's place, no dice on that, still silent when I turn the key to start.

If you're referring to the Automatic Shutdown Relay, the engine doesn't crank at all (I'm going off what I've found on the internet related to your question)--there's no activity at the starter whatsoever when I turn the engine over. If that can prevent the starter from cranking, I can check that as well.

Something I forgot to mention in the original post was, I can jump the 12v at the constant power to the starter to the Solenoid and get it to start when I set the ignition to on, so I know the starter itself is working fine. There's some kind of voltage loss to the Solenoid that I'm trying to isolate. It's either a bad relay (which I'm checking tomorrow) or a connection between the relay to the Solenoid. I just don't know which.

I can double check the ASD relay but I'm not sure if that'd be related. As an aside, I do hear the fuel pump priming when setting the key to "On".

Uploaded the images to the forums. I even added where the ground and positives go after leaving the battery. I haven't traced them myself yet since it's been raining a lot the past week since the Jeep went down.

(Damn, I just realized how detailed of photos this old phone camera takes. 😅)

Your ignition actuator and switch both seem to be working since you are getting a click at the relay when you turn the key to start (assuming that is accurate). Your ASD relay and fuse don't seem to be the issue since it's not a crank but not fire issue (but check them in case I'm wrong).

I would like to ask you to verify that your battery is charged up enough, but this shouldn't be the problem since you said you could jump it to get it to crank.

Is the spade connector on the starter's 12v ignition wire tightly connected without any corrosion and the wire isn't damaged?

If you have a voltmeter or test light and someone to turn the key, you can verify if you are getting voltage at the same starter 12v ignition input when you try to start the vehicle. Let's verify you are getting the 12v signal to the starter since you said you were able to jump it earlier.

My son & i just dealt with this on his 01 Sahara. There was 1 inch of a bad wire somewhere underneath the underhood fuse box that was corroded enough to only all 8v through.
We didn't find it or fix it, we had to take it to a shop.
Good luck, we spent hours trying to find the problem before we gave up, push started it & took it in

Thank you, the battery connections look good. Could you post a picture of the ground stud on the engine block near the oil filter please.

Sure, attached. It was kind of difficult to get a good picture but there it is.

Had a funny thing happen this afternoon after work. I decided I wanted to let the Jeep run since it's been a week since I parked it so I jumped the starter solenoid manually to let it run for 15 minutes and get up to temperature. After doing so, I turned it off, and just for laughs, I turned it to start. The Jeep fired up fine. I laughed, turned it off, tried it again. Just fine. Did it a third time. Click-click-click, nothing. Turned the key off, waited a minute, tried again, nothing.

There's certainly a loose connection somewhere. I just haven't isolated it yet.

I'd charge the battery and see what happens (and have it tested).

Once running, ensure that your alternator is charging the battery. And for good measure, properly check your battery, alternator, and starter connections again to ensure they are clean and tight.

Can’t tell much from the poor picture. 😞

Yeah I tightened everything up today at the hobby shop. Seems everything is good now.

I will say, I tried to take the solenoid cable off of the starter just to test some things but the thread was so corroded (thanks Guam) that when I was trying it actually started bending the L bracket to the solenoid itself. So instead of trying to remove it to test, I just went to every ground and power connection and tightened them down slightly more than hand tight just to make sure everything has a good connection to where it needs to be.

Hopefully this resolves the issue, it not, at least I know the other places to check.

Thanks all for the insights and suggestions, gives me a point to start at if this gremlin decides to return.
