U-joint issue

I have a SYE so it's a double carden. The double carden went out. It egged out the yoke on the transfer case and took out the outer pinion bearing and stretched the Dana 35 yoke.

Took a lot of parts and time to replace.

So I’ve replaced the worn U-joint with the spicer 5-1310X and the bang is still there. Anyone have any ideas on what it could be? Sounds/feels like it’s coming from the rear transmission/transfer case area so kind thinking something with the transfer case.

Now prop the phone up so it's not Blare Witch project and spin the wheels and driveshaft.

Overall looking good.

Any chunks?

I can't stress the importance of shaking and pulling on everything.

Mac to my eye his spider gears look like they are missing chunks, ring gear has similar missing chunks.

Looks to me like your entire gear set chewed on some metal. Better pics will help.

Agree with @NashvilleTJ. It’s done for. You can get new gears but if you’re on a budget, I’d recommend finding another axle with the same ratios and swapping it in. Sell the busted one (for parts and repair) and recoup some cash.


Judging by the marks on the carrier, looks to me like a pinion bearing went bad causing the pinion to hit the carrier and chip some teeth on the spider gears which then caused the ring and pinion to chew the resulting chunks.
