What did you do to your TJ today?

While my LJ is down for a cracked radiator I used the time to install the Tuffy back half center console that my wife ordered as a peace offering after breaking the lid on my OEM console (this thread, post #6528). Now my console and glove box are keyed alike. I also ordered two matching locks for my homemade storage box and gas filler cover, but they are just a bit too long to do a straight swap. I'm going to have to take some time to consider what I need to adjust ("By gum, I'll MAKE it fit!!!"), but when I'm done I'll have one key for the ignition and doors and one for everything else.

How you liking the extra length? Do you notice quite a bit of difference between the two rigs?

Hard to say so far, the soft top is in the back of the LJ right now and I need to take off the hard top to get it out so I haven’t fully appreciated the storage just yet.

The lift on the LJ currently is skyjacker with a dropped pitman arm so it’s not the best thing to drive. When I get it set up as I want it with quality components it’ll probably be a better determination, my TJ was so smooth.

Besides that I haven’t noticed the extra length too much it still feels pretty small and nimble.
 
Had a good day with the jeep! Changed the air filter and also replaced the fluid in the six speed with MTL. Did the front and rear diffs. While I had the covers off I went ahead and wire brushed them and repainted them with Rustoleum rust converter. Got to wrench with my 10-year-old which was the best part of it all.

I was a bit taken aback by the amount of shavings on the tranny drain plug. A Google search yielded several posts describing it as normal. Thoughts?

The diff fluid, especially the rear, was black and smelled horrendous. It took some elbow grease to get the inside of the covers clean as the old oil was caked on. After the fluid job, the tranny shifts much smoother and quieter, and I noticed a lot less rolling resistance.

I'm curious as to what you used as a sealer/gasket when you reinstalled the diff covers. While I know that there are many who say to use a RTV-type sealant, I always hated the mess. And supposedly, paper gaskets don't seal as well, or so I hear.

I decided to try a rather upscale (expensive) gasket for the diff covers. The brand is called Lube Locker. They were about $23 a piece, if I recall correctly (Dana 44 and Dana 30). They claim to be reusable, and the reviews were very good, so I figured I'd try 'em.

I just installed them on my jeep. Think i paid 40 or so for both.

I think its the only part the 4 wheel parts carrys in stock.

Ill let you know in 30k miles if the can be reused. :risas3:

I purchased the LubeLockers on Amazon as well. With a test drive after the change and having sat for a few hours since, I ran my fingers along the bottom of both diffs and they were dry.

I had purchased the black RTV just in case I needed it, but it looks like the LubeLockers are performing as they’re supposed to. I paid about the same on Amazon as you did.

I’ve got through 2 front diff changes with my Dana 44 with a Lube Locker on it, and haven’t had any issues.

Just found this thread, after a couple weeks of restoring my new to me 1998 TJ back to a stock daily driver usable condition for now with brakes, shocks, windshield, alingment and a few other minor things, the only thing i did today was ad a passenger entry light socket that was missing or never installed. Drove it about 60 miles with the 1/2 soft windows off. Got some good air. Ha Ha.
