Bad gear set up?

I have a feeling that because the noise is coming from the locker that they will blame the gears on the locker.

I am pretty sure I checked gear wear patterns last year when I changed oils. They looked good then. My guess it something from the locker broke and caused my gear wear? Just my thoughts.

They can try. There are enough gear savvy folks on here and elsewhere that are more than glad to explain that the carrier bearings hold the locker in place. Unless those died somehow and are letting the locker move around, it is still the fault of the gear setter and a very strong case can be made that if the carrier bearings are worn enough to do that, that is still the fault of the gear setter.

The video is free play before drive shaft or opposite tire spins.
You are getting the slack from the ring and pinion and any slack in the splines when you do it that way. You need to lock the driveshaft down so you can see what slack you do have before the slack in the ring and pinion.

The amount of backlash could also be telling if OP wants to set the tires on the ground (so they won't spin), TC in neutral, and rotate the driveshaft by hand. It should move with the backlash, but not a lot.

It definitely moves a lot more than just back lash. Probably close to 1/8th turn maybe more. Will post a video later when I get home.

Not as much play as I thought on the DS. But none the less it has to come out. Will see what happened then.

Dropped it off at the doctor last night. Hoping the rear gears look better than the front. Also hoping the front locker can be saved. Seems like a lot of play and not sure where the clicking noise is coming from. Will see soon.

Finally got over to pick up my Jeep. Locker was fine. Just needed new gears. Clicking noise is gone. So either it was the gears making it sound like a lockright or previous install didn’t get the sensor switch aligned properly. I don’t use it so I’m not sure if it worked or not. It feels to handle a bit better/smoother. Could be a placebo effect or the botched gear install and bad gears were causing something.
Need to replace sway bar link bushings then back to planning my 12” shock install.
