Tummy tuck What transfer case skid do you use

My TJ and my dads TJ both have undercover fab full cover systems. Both Jeeps have the "Original High Clearance Skid" and it drops about two inches below the frame. Which is way better than the stock skid. They're very strong and the quality is evident. We both had ours powder coated. I feel this photo shows how far it hangs down well.

I have the UCF ultra high clearance skid and am considering getting the aluminum skid plate to add to it. I am wondering if there another brand/type skid that I could use to my oil pan other than the UCF one? Just looking for something a bit less expensive if possible but not at the expense of function.

@Jorge Bolivar Hello Jorge. For context, I'm looking to get a TT kit for my 2000 TJ. I was planning on getting a Savvy kit but they are now discontinued (unfortunately). Now, I'm considering the UCF ultra high clearance skid with the engine skid. The only downside to this kit is that it does not come with a cross member.

Did you install your UCF skid with the Genright cross member? If so, do you have any pictures that you could share of the cross member? I'm curious about how the cross member will fit.

Also, if you've had the skid installed for the last couple years, have you had any regrets, issues, or unexpected outcomes from this skid/crossmember? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

I have the Savvy kit, just got it Friday the 13th. Doesn't look like they are discontinued, just back ordered. Also I think I got the last one they had for a 2006 TJ, before they went on backorder.

@Wallyc13 Congrats on getting the skid! I'm jealous

The early year model is discontinued. Unfortunately, they have no plans of continuing that model unless there is a group buy (I've personally reached out to them and was told this). Here's a thread: https://wranglertjforum.com/threads/savvy-has-discontinued-the-tj-transfer-case-skid.26112/

Because of this, I'm looking into other skids and am interested in the UCF skid but I want the benefit of having a cross member for maintenance purposes (which is where the Genright crossmember comes in).

I don't feel that having to support the transmission when the skid is off for maintenance is a big deal. The UCF skid is absolutely reinforced in that area it is just integral to the skid.

@Mike the Silver TJ That's fair & I may end up only installing the UCF skid. I've no doubt that it will hold up well to a fair amount of abuse (do you have any cons for the UCF?)

Having said that, I'm still wanting to get as much information as possible before making a purchase and I'm curious to hear @Jorge Bolivar's feedback and see any pics that he is willing to share

Until you are on the side of the road, deep in the woods, or vacationing some far off distance from the garage.

It really is night and day, doesn't, "seem," like it would be a big difference, it isn't, its a little details that seems to pay dividends.

I have read that the ultra with the low pro trans mount does result in some vibes at idle. Which is obvious considering the design.

I was careful to use the word "maintenance" rather than the term "trail side repair". Either way I get it but the UCF is the right way to go for me.

I've also read a thread here where a guy removed his stock skid without knowing that the trans needed to be supported. He buttoned it all back up with no issues.

If the Genright cross member is compatible with the UCF skid it may be something I look into in the future. The UCF skid is stout but light, I got the aluminum version.

No cons except the cross member which I dont feel is a big deal.

Not sure about other skids but the UCF skid has the trans mount studs and nuts recessed. The stock skid has the studs exposed and can get sheared off, this happened with my stock skid.

I just finished the TT project on my 97.
I used the TMR crossmember kit and a Barnes 4WD flat skid plate.

@davidgoodman Awesome! Thanks for the shot, looks good! (y)

If you do take more or have more & post tomorrow, I'd love to see some shots of the crossmember specifically such as where it connects to your frame or where the transmission passes over it. Appreciate it!

@Fouledplugs: I did read that on a few other threads (& also read from UCFs website that it should: "go far toward reducing drive-line vibration" so that's consistent haha). Can you elaborate on what in the design makes the potential of it vibrating at idle obvious?

Also, I just read before that you planned to install the GenRight cross member. I assume based off your last few posts that you got around to this. Any pics to share? Thank you!

@Mike the Silver TJ: Good point about the recessed nuts. Do you have the LoPro trans mount or did you stick with the stock mount? If you went with the former, have you had any vibration issues? Also, not sure if you got the ultra clearance, no body mount one, or one of the other options

Bit of a long story and i will attempt to make it quick. I got the extra clearance skid (middle ground for the 03-06). Since I am shopping for an LJ I installed the skid with a 1 inch drop and expect to make the other necessary mods to an LJ that is in my future when I swap skids. So, with a 1 inch drop it is much like a no body lift skid. I had recently replaced factory mount with one that was supposed to be rubber but it induced vibes at idle with the stock skid. No difference with the UCF skid. I am living with the vibes at idle no problem so if the low pro mount does that I would be ok with it.

There is less, ”meat,” with the lo-pro mount. That means less material to absorb any vibrations.

Built a home, so all my Jeep projects, big and small, have been on ice.

I have the ultra high clearance UCF skid and I used the stock transmission mount. No additional vibes at idle:

The drop is about 1.25” from the frame rails. Only modification I needed to do was the exhaust system. I love mine and Savvy wasn’t an option since I have a 2.5L.

I have my eye on the Ucf aluminum skid plates.

I was wondering if any one had the specs for each configuration with regards to the stock position of the transfer case mounting surface.
