Export TJ differences

Hello, I’m an American expat living in Saudi and recently purchased a ‘97 TJ Sahara here to restore. My question is what are the differences between the export and US spec TJs? I found out today that mine does not have O2 sensors, catalytic converters, and that the TPS sensor is different. Unfortunately I had purchased the O2 sensors and TPS sensor while home in the US. Any help would be appreciated.

My export 03 TJ has one O2 sensor downstream, just ahead of the CAT. It did not have the pre cat O2 sensors. I had the engine light on until I installed a new exhaust with pre-cats. I plugged the bungs. Your tail lights likely have a separate circuit for brake lights and a separate one for turn signals. I don't have a US spec'd to compare to, but I think that is the main difference.

BTW, your rig may have had the cats pulled out by a PO. I know the later ones had them. Not sure about the 97. Good junkyards here in the UAE. I ordered my US spec'd exhaust on Amazon and got the entire front to rear set up. The old one was not rusted, just a PO had eliminated my cats. I returned it to stock and it runs better, quieter, and cooler. Who knew?

Thank you for the info. By chance have you upgraded your taillights to LED type such as Savvy?

I have not swapped the rear lights. You would need to get lights that were designed for separate turn signal and brake light circuits. The other option would be to use a converter that reduces 6 wires to 4. I did that for a buddy's JK. He was happy, I thought it was a PITA. I did just install LED headlamps, but I saved the old ones to reinstall to pass the yearly DoT inspection. If you ever want to visit, come on over. I'll keep a light on for you. Great junkyards here and also reasonably good shop support. Just took my TK camping on the beach in Fujairah for a couple days. A place called Snoopy Island.

Thank you for the invite. We make it to Dubai/Abu Dhabi usually once a year or so. I will let you know if we are headed your way. The only part that I really need now from a junkyard would be the rear license plate mount and light. It appears it is impossible to find new. I have a Kargo Master Congo cage and roof rack for 1997-2006 TJs for sale if you know of anyone interested.

Do you need the license plate bracket for the body or rear bumper? I do have a good source for those brand stereos.

Our vehicle inspections here are tough. I remove my aftermarket rear bumper and install the original when I bring it in. You even have to have the rear seat in.

I'll keep my eyes open for one. Are your plates like mine?

Not sure if your interested or someone you might know is but I have a Kargo master roof rack and basket for sale. I will also throw in an interior shelving system that the previous owner used for deep desert camping. 1000sr.

Just a quick update on catalytic convertors and O2 sensors for 1997 TJ Wranglers. All middle east export models were shipped with leaded gasoline specs so therefore they did not have catalytic convertors or O2 sensors.
