Can I grind these threads off?

Wanting to get this electric fan shoehorned in here. I have my inter-cooler stuffed as far forward as I can then my AC rad. So there’s not much room for the radiator and electric fan. I need to grind off the threaded part that used to hold on the mechanical fan. It’ll give me about 3/4 of an inch clearance. I can always buy another one if I want to change it back right? Or will I have to change the whole water pump?

I have a V-8 in my TJ and had clearance issues with the aluminum radiator I had put in. I cut the threads of the snout of the water pump pulley and didn't have any problems but I only ran with it like that for about 6 months.

If you want to go back to a mechanical fan you would have to replace the whole water pump as the pulley bracket is press fit as far as I know.

How much clearance did you have?

I thought I had taken some pictures of it once I cut the threads off but I can't find them. I would guess about 1/2" from the fan motor to the pulley. My water pump is different than yours. On a V-8 the pulley is part of the water pump itself.
 
Good to know that if I end up with 5/8-1/2” clearance that, that will be enough for engine movement. I was worried about that. Why did you have it for only 6 months?

I'd swapped to the aluminum radiator because my engine was having overheating issues. After I swapped to it I found out it wasn't a cooling issue with the radiator but a problem with the engine itself. I still haven't verified but I think I have a cracked head. I have exhaust blowing thru my radiator. The cracked heads are reported to be a issue with the magnum engines.

If you carefully look at the motor and transmission mounts you can answer your own question. Pretend the rubber is competely gone, that's how much the engine can move. It ain't going to bend the frame it's just going to smoosh the rubber. On mine I have less than 1/2" before it's metal to metal.

I’m glad I didn’t go that route then. I have a Doaner engine and trans from my son’s 95 Grand Cherokee that he left in front of our house. I thought it would be easier to go the turbo route.
