Another knocking sound (resolved)

Somehow I got it in my head the sound was cyclical with mph. If it is only when hitting a bump then I apologize for giving crap advice. That is an entirely different question than the one I was trying to answer.

No worries. It's all good. I appreciate all of the replies. My lower back decided it wanted to have me functioning like a 90 y/o yesterday afternoon. Because of that I wasn't able to get out there and check the TC linkage, so the cause is still unknown.

Woke up this morning with no change in my lower back, so I'm thinking I'll just go ahead and order the kit. If it isn't that, I'll just add it to the standby parts.

Sure sounds like that may very well be the culprit though.

I'll 2nd the transfer case lever. I had the same exact situation. Clunking noise disappeared in 4wd. Got he Crown kit from Quadratec. I only changed the copper sleeve and the noise went away. I haven't tackled the nylon inserts yet. I have read they can be a bit of a chore.

Sucks getting old.
Saying that it sucks is putting it mildly, I believe. My 30s have been a hell of a ride.
Went and got a couple of injections back there this weekend and I'm close to functional today.

Okay, cool. I haven't yet looked into the process of swapping the parts out. Hopefully it's not too much of a bugger. Right now I'm just itching to crawl under there to see what I can see.
Thanks for the link. I looked this past weekend and found it on Amazon. It's about $4 or so more, but it'll help Chris with the forum.

Keeping my fingers crossed this is what is causing the issue.

My back still hasn't fully come around, but I got the parts in.
Still haven't seen the parts that these are intended to replace, but I'm hoping now that I can get away with doing the same.

I see now why the price of them is only $13.

Yup that’s the kit. I only replaced the brass bushing and the rubber piece that fits over it and got lucky that my noise went away. People say you can use a heat gun to soften the plastic bushings making them easier to get in and out if you need to replace them too.
Hope it helps

That does help. Thanks for the tip

Finally able to get my eyes on the parts. I feel like this is definitely what has been causing the tapping sound.

It's a little hard to hear in the video, but its there. Sounds just like what I've been hearing. Looks as if mine is a worn copper bushing also.

For anyone who's interested, here's some pictures.

I suppose it may be this be this bushing here, but it sounds more like it's going to be the copper bushing.

I ended up doing the same with not replacing the plastic grommets. Had I known what I know now, I would have replaced it all years ago when I dropped the pan to replace the trans mount.

The old bushing did have a little movement though, causing a faint clicking sound when pushed from side to side.

Definitely not the hardest job, but their location makes it awkward and time consuming. I need to look and see how those plastic grommets are being replaced. I attempted to pop loose the closest, but it wasn't coming loose without a fight. Again, really awkward.

Thanks again for the help

Glad you got it fixed. I spent my time under the Jeep squinting through the falling sand and dirt as I replaced mine. I like your method better!🤣
Funny you mention that. It didn't go as smoothly as it seems. As ashamed as I am to admit it, I didn't discover the bolts in the floor pan until AFTER I spent 15 minutes or so laying under the jeep, cursing and fumbling with the two small bolts until I got them out.

That was 15 minutes not adding in the time spent going inside to flush a grain of sand from my eye.

I did have safely glasses on, but it was hard to see through the 2" hole in the skid pan while peering through fogged up lenses.
