After messing with straps to take off the hard top i will be using a hoist from now on. The question is ceiling or truss mount, or wall mount? Manual or electric? 12 volt or 120 volt? With or without remote? I know, lots of questions, bit i want to get this right. Thanks.

We got the Harkin system about a year ago. Its a manual system, but with the pully system, it drops the pull power down. We've been very happy with it. We paid $150 on Extreme Terrain.

An inexpensive 1,000 lb. rope hoist will work. I use one for my TJ & LJ.

Anyone ever rigged up a pully system that uses the Jeep winch to lift the top?

I mounted a reversible boat winch to my workbench and used a couple pulleys to get the line over to where my Jeep is parked for winter storage. I bought a couple short straps and they get hooked to a D-Ring. I've only used it twice but its worked great and I can easily use it without help.

I bought a used Lange (manual hoist) just for the T bar. Added a harbor freight winch and have rigged it up in two different garages, in two very different ways. I'm sure you could also build the T bar just as easily if you wanted to go cheap.
Here's one of them. The hoist is plugged in (120), the cord hanging down is the remote.
I currently have a much smaller garage and had to mount the winch on the wall.

I went with the 4 pulleys and trailer winch method. Bottom edge is right at 6' and it's placed so we have walkway access without running into it. This thread reminded me that I bought the Jeep in Nov. 2000, hung up the hardtop in late Dec. 2000 and haven't had it down since! Guess I didn't really need the dual top option. 
I mounted an electric hoist from harbor freight on a unistrut trolley to allow myself to push it to the back wall of my garage after removal.

and it comes with the yellow straps to make the cradle. I used 2 spare ratchet straps (orange) and hooked them to the yellow flat strap that came with the hoist. Tied off the front for good measure and hooked to the garage door opener hanger. Hoist is attached to the ceiling with a piece of unistrut. My ceilings are 16' so this was the best option.

the lange power hoist is what i have. best $235 i’ve spent on the jeep. electric is the way to go!
