I know this is little soon but.......What is a safe speed to travel in 4high. I plan on using this in the winter and I work about 50 minutes away from home and is all highway. So what is a safe speed to travel? I have had plenty of trucks that you can be running 55mph and put it in 4wd on the fly.

That you're in 4Hi doesn't limit the speed you can drive in but that's where the common sense comes into play. You can drive at any safe speed in 4Hi but ya still gotta be able to stop too. I know you realize that but not everyone who may read this in the future is bright enough to know that lol. I was on a Salt Lake CIty freeway and I couldn't see more than 20-30' in a bad snow storm, I moved all the way over and slowed down and had big trucks almost run me over before passing me at 50 mph in conditions I could barely see in.

Keep in mind 4Hi is not meant for roads that aren't covered in something slick like ice or snow. And no, that does not include streets that are simply wet from lots of rain, 4Hi is inappropriate for streets that are simply wet.

Ok good I thought I saw that you should be under 45MPH.....that is good to know and thank you

Put it this way. You should only be using 4 Hi when the road is sufficiently slippery to allow the the axels to spin at different speeds. If conditions are that slippery, and you are worried you are traveling too fast for 4WD, then you are traveling too fast for your safety.

Not sure about your statement " be running 55mph and put it in 4wd on the fly" I would need to look at my owners manual. I usually come to a stop when shifting between 4 wheel and 2 wheel drive, but again maybe the owners manual says that the way to do it.

I'd say if you follow Jeeps guidelines, only shift below 55 and only use in low traction situations you are totally fine. I often find myself a little outside those guidelines but don't mind the risk. I also don't remember if Jeep suggests a top speed to be in 4wd, maybe somebody knows that? I don't personally see a need to be more careful than Jeep suggests but there certainly isn't anything wrong with it.

Edit: Just found a copy of a 2005 manual, no top speed for 4HI that I could find

You can shift to 4 high at any (reasonable) speed safely. I have shifted into it at 65 mph before, though conditions that warrant 4 high also warrant not going 65 mph.
Excellent post, good word use and phrasing. I give it a 98.

I would rate it with a post that I made last year.

Chris, make a note of this one for the next class for newbies.

I've run in 4hi up to 75 mph (on a straight stretch of freeway, without a rear drive shaft, testing for vibes, and for a short period of time).

I’m honored to receive the AndyG approval award. I would like to bring up my accomplishment at the next regearing committee meeting. Do you have a plaque or trophy you could send so I can show it to all my friends?

Yes , we will are working on the new Forum Badge of Merit.

We are taking a hard look at how prepositions are used before we make permanent decisions. We take quality pretty serious.

It does not say to stop. Read your owners manual to learn about its shift on the fly ability.

My Jeep has a 4Hi?
