Side Rocker plates

Just wondering why so many TJ,s have them fitted.

Are you talking about rocker guards?

Before the newer style rockers & corner guards were available this was how you protected your body. Look at all the older CJ's & Flatties.

I had this type stuff on my YJ in the early 90's.

That was my thought because they are only thin aluminium but the Rubicon came with them so must serve more of a purpose?
Mostly decorative. They can be used to slide if you are gentle setting the Jeep onto them. But any decent hit and they will bend and start to deform the tub. They also aren't really tall enough, long enough and they would benefit from some type of a full length rub rail to be useful as sliders.

The old versions were just thin aluminum diamond plating.
Weigh about 4 pounds each corner guard as example. Wouldn't protect shit.

Newer ones do really provide protection.

This one weighs probably approaching 50 pounds if not more...each.
It's not thin aluminum and will take a beating.

Days of yore...
That diamond plate shit was just to cover up scabs...or someone's idea of a dress up🙄🙄
