Ive had my 2004 tj since new its a beauty love the auto trans but want to go manual ive done all the work on my jeep from lift to uper and lower joints brakes ect. Regular maintenance would this be too much of a big job im no mechanic i dont daily the jeep so i dont mind having it parked while i swap it out

Why?
It can be done but it is an extensive job that requires sourcing all of the parts. If you go forward I would look for someone who wants an auto and trade parts.

Yea i saw that on a youtube video and would be way easier but here in fresno ca the tj jeeps are getting really rare nothing but 4 doors and no parts arounds my area i dont mind buying new parts was just curious if anyone had done this job

Ha! Yeah, I'd love to trade ya. I wouldn't mind going back to an auto.

If you don't do much wheeling, mostly street driving, this could be a good mod.

I went the other direction since my Jeep is just for wheeling. Replaced the 6 speed with a 42RLE. I only miss the manual driving up mountains. I would never consider another manual for a Jeep.

My auto trans is perfect for all terrain i just miss the shifting all my cars have been manual i do allot of trailing finding new fishing spots and hunting spots i dont know i might be wrong here but i feel i would benifit more from a manual transmission instead of an auto im going to try tackaling the job on the swap ill lost picks and videos on the process

Why you should install only oem parts? I mean the driveshafts, axles. Here in turdworld with scarce american car parts i know a guy with yj and tj who did the same swap. He went lowbuck and created tinkered his own driveshafts from nissan patrol driveshafts, they are alot beefier both at pipe side and u joint sides. In usa it would be even easier for you since you have old experienced machinist who would calibrate your homemade driveshafts. If not ecm the most problematic would be driveshafts and rear axle. The clutch master cylinder placement is already build in from factory just plugged with plastic near brake booster. Even if you wont find clutch oedal assembly you can make one yourself.

I have to add his both axles are nissan patrol axles. Wider than our danas. I want to go wide also. I used to ride 300 wide tyres before it broke my axle. Now i have these thin pizza cutter things.

Converting it to a manual transmission would be a giant step backwards when offroad. YES manual transmissions can and are more fun in some situations but your automatic is SUCH a better transmission for when you're offroad.

Not to mention your current automatic generates 2-3X more torque when going up/over obstacles than a manual transmission can is a huge plus for it. That 2-3X greater torque is due to the magic going on inside the torque converter which is a great thing to have. Nope that's not a rumor, it's a well known benefit of automatic transmissions and one of the main reasons why I converted from my TJ's original 5-speed to an automatic. Not to mention the automatic has an "infinitely low" 1st gear ratio due, again, to the torque converter. Those two reasons are why you'll see nearly nothing but automatic transmissions in serious competition rigs like in King of the Hammers.
