Yeah from SD that would be a trek, only worth it if you camped and made it a 2 day trip. It's mostly BLM land so a lot of people dry camp right where the trails start.

It's the same as going to big bear timewise from Orange county. Took 2.5 hours one way, and it is worth it. Tons of trails to explore along with abandoned mines.

I guarantee there was a lot of movement if your trans was hanging by your motor mounts while you were driving. If your trans was fine prior to dropping the skid, I'd put the blame on driving without the skid before trying different ATF.
