Toe to heel doesn't need to be centered perfectly on the tooth although it would be if all things were perfect. Too deep or too shallow is determined by the pattern from top to root. If you pulled 2 thou from pinion, it would be really shallow.

The axle shaft is tightened to the unit bearing (hub). The nut gets torqued to 175 ft/lbs. The unit bearing bolts to the knuckle with the three 13mm 12 point bolts at 75 ft/lbs. Your stock Dana 30 has an open carrier, so one wheel can spin while the other doesn't. The driveshaft will spin...

Are you 100% certain that there isn't a vent hole up there and maybe just clogged with dirt? It doesn't make sense that somebody would just weld it shut for no reason.
