Mac to my eye his spider gears look like they are missing chunks, ring gear has similar missing chunks.

Enders game is good but Enders shadow is better. ;) and of course Lord of the Rings if you have not already read it. Project Hail Mary is also very good. For sci fi I would recommend: the Man who fell to earth and imperial earth. Both very good!
