The unfortunate TJ of the day thread

Wait...did they "upgrade" a TJ to leaf springs??? WTF.

Will non-available OEM electronic parts finally kill our TJ's?

Sorry, but no. An EMP has little or no direct effect on most vehicles, including TJs. In one documented test that I found, a small percentage of vehicles with the motors running were stalled when hit with EMP in a controlled test chamber and all but one was able to restart immediately. There was...

    Sick of LEDs already

There is no Canbus in TJs or LJs. Not until JKs, I'm pretty sure.

How to make your Jeep unsalable

Somewhere, there is a buyer searching a Jeep like each of those and willing to pay that price. Whether or not they will find that buyer ... well, there's the question. In a rare occurrence, my hobby and job have come together - this is basically the same problem my company is trying to solve...

Very glad I didn't drive my TJ today (got rear ended)

I did get hit in my TJ under similar circumstances. It was night and raining. Big difference is that the person behind me (also in a Camry) had been behind me for like 5 minutes in heavy stop and go traffic. Then BASH! Dunno WTF she was doing, but hit me going maybe 25. I have a Garvin...

What did you do to your TJ today?

Finished my proof-of-concept mounts and installed my CJ-style mirrors. I'll try them out this week to see if I like this arrangement as much as I remember from back in my CJ days. Then I'll work on sourcing some 3/4" aluminum and make some prototypes that are more usable long term (such as in...

32's and the 3.07 rear diff

I don't have any experience in that area. My comment was focused on this being a guy who somehow gets people to listen to him, without having any real knowledge. For example, he is talking about "what it's like to drive a Jeep with 35" tires" (and no lift), but doesn't cover the obvious case of...

32's and the 3.07 rear diff

I watched about 3 minutes of that before deciding that my teenage boys know more about jeeps than he does.

Shock longevity: OEM vs OE replacements vs modified/lifted

Gotcha. That is good advice. I don't know if I trust this particular shop or not (4WheelParts). They were highly recommended for doing an good job alignment on a Jeep by a guy I respect. That shop gave me a $4k quote to replace my aging 3" rancho lift with a 2" OME, stock control arms and do a...

Shock longevity: OEM vs OE replacements vs modified/lifted

Oh, I'm sure the shocks are shot. Besides failing the bumper test on the front, if I hit certain bumps over 50 mph with tire pressure under 33 lbs (cold), it sets off a totally un-dampened oscillation in the suspension. Death bounce, I would call it. Just had it in the local 4WD shop for an...

32's and the 3.07 rear diff

Interesting the different perspectives on this. I heard something like "5th gear with 3.07 gears is useless with 30" + tires" earlier in this thread. I've been driving just such a TJ (31" tires) for 21 years. I shift to 5th around 60mph. It cruises the highway around 70mph at 2100 rpms. Seems...

Shock longevity: OEM vs OE replacements vs modified/lifted

I am curious if there is any general wisdom about longevity of shocks available to us. The question arises from the 2 different experience on my TJ and LJ: My TJ is a 97 that I've owned since 2000. It has a little over 150k miles and has lived its entire life in NC and been garaged for much of...

32's and the 3.07 rear diff

How fast are you planning to drive? I can reach 85 on my 97 with 3.07 gears no problem. 31" tires. Would not want to drive faster in a Wrangler, regardless of gearing.

The unfortunate TJ of the day thread

I gotta say, I'm diggin' the Jeepneys :) Looks like more fun than any of the Lyft or Uber rides I've had! Except the one stacked 15ft high with appliances and such ... I don't get that.

    Seat Belt Solutions

I bought some replacements off eBay and was not happy with them. They were in cosmetically worse shape than what I had, though the springs work better than mine. I think I'm going to try sending my original belts into seatbeltrestore.com instead.

What did you do to your TJ today?

Replaced door pin bushings with the Quadratec Delrin bushing set. Went smoothly, but discovered that one of the door hinge pins was sheared off. Ordered a pair of replacements. Also found the driver-side has already been replaced, as the tops of the pins are not painted to match. Now I know the...

    Identify this lift

After further thought and research, I'm considering the Quadratec 2.5" lift kit with Fox shocks to replace the lift I have. I also have new spring isolators and stock bump stops in my cart, along with Crown lower control arms. I don't know the condition of the isolators or bump stops, but for a...
