When to just replace parts more of a discussion then question

This post is as much for me to document for myself what I'm doing to get some feedback as it is asking for help - More of a discussion. I'm finally tackling the leaky valve cover. But while doing this job, I'm finding many questionable old original parts and wondering if, since the jeep is now...

    Exhaust manifold replacements

My exhaust manifolds need to be replaced on my 05 LJ with the 4 O2 sensor setup. Should I just go with the OEM setup of two exhaust manifolds or should I go with an exhaust header? Price appears to be nearly the same. Figure I should replace the cats while I'm there. Any suggestion on what...

Who is making 6 inch highline fenders these days?

Who is making 6 inch Highline fenders these days? I'd love to go with narrower but we have engineering laws in my area and the local inspect is strict on tire coverage. Big bonus if they come in Aluminum. Genright — I was going to pull the trigger on them today but it 3x the cost to get them...

Rubicon Locker Pump PSI Test Results

I saw a thread about a week ago, but now I can't find it. Someone was asking for the PSI to inflate a Rubicon locker. It was said to be between 5-8psi but some people were arguing that it had to be more than that. I thought I'd post a test result here today. I was replacing an airline on a TJ...

    Hydro assist steering in steps?

My power steering pump is going and I had some steering overheating issues last summer. (I'm runnings 35s and might be going to 36s in the future) So I think my solution will be to buy: Black magics TJ Nearly Bolt-in Hydro Assist for Currie Steering kit PSC Ported steering gear - SG400R - Big...

Tie rod flip with ZJ tie rod

I see people doing this with the currie setup and thought it would be no problems with the ZJ setup but got looking today and the ZJ bar does a bend it in and wondering if I'm going to run into clearance issues. The bend is great for clearance on the diff but might cause issues here. Before I...

Is there a downside to coilovers in the rear?

I've been planning out a project on my LJ where I was going to outboard the rear shocks and centre the rear coils.. But tonight I'm wondering why not just go Coilover?? Other than cost (which I know is a big factor) isn't it just better to go coil cover? what is the big downside? Something like...

Front Truss / Pull front gears to remove axle seals?

Looking at some winter projects and thinking about adding a front truss to my Rubicon Dana 44 front axle. Should I remove the inner seals and pinion seals? I'm thinking they might melt in the process. Not really wanting to pull my front gears since they were just installed. I'm on the fence...

LJ Rubicon - aka the Wombat

I've owned a few Tjs over the years but I started this build a few years ago but it was a slow start due to having a few kids, moving, house flooding twice and a number of issues with the Jeep but its finally seeing the trails on a regular base now. Figured its time to start a build thread :) I...

    Wiring Diagram Software

Does anyone suggest a simple Wiring diagram software? I find I normally just end up drawing it on paper because most the software doesn't make showing the pins on items like relay's all that easy? I see nice diagrams sometimes but have no idea how they created them..

Replacing rear view mirror with monitor

First off I get it this might not be legal in all places but it is where I live as long as you have two side mirrors. I was going to add a two camera system to my Jeep and mount a smaller monitor on the dash but I was watching a video last night where a guy replaced his rear view mirror with a...

Thoughts on 1350 u-joint in axle shaft?

I'm building a new Jeep and going to upgrade the front shafts to Chrome-Moly. I've been talked out of going RCV but just stumbled across Revolutions Axle and Gears 1350 shafts.. I heard the RA&G shafts are the ones to go with but do I go 1350 or 5-760X... I had always thought the issue with a...

How do I inspect the spider gears on a TJ Rubicon locker?

I've got an odd question.. How do I check the spider gears on a TJ Rubicon Locker while the locker is out of the Jeep? (Front Locker) I had a loud pop on the highway (75 mph) then horrible noise at low speeds and vibe at high. On initial inspection, though it was the locker (pinion/ring look...

    When to rebuild t-case

I’ve got a rubicon with around 200,000 miles on it. transfercase feels fine but just thinking ahead to next winters projects and wondering if you guys would think it’s worth while pulling it apart to rebuild? If it was just a 231 I wouldn’t. But these rubicon cases are hard to come by. Thoughts??

Anything else I should replace while the oil pan is off?

I’m going to be replacing my rear main seal this month. Should I replace anything like the oil pick up filter while the pan is off? It’s a 05 Lj 4.0 with 175,000 miles on it.

Keep ripping zerk fittings off driveshaft

first weekend out wheeling with my new driveshafts and ripped off both front and rear zerks that grease the splines. Tom Woods rear and Oliver front. I’m tempted to replace them with a lower profile needle zerks but wonder if a flush Allan bolt or something would be better. Just pull the bolt...

Where in the Tj suspension swing would the driveshaft be the longest?

I know this might sound like a stupid question but wherein the suspension cycle is the rear driveshaft the longest? I figured it was at max droop but I just did that and it got shorter. It makes sense after a beer because while the axle is moving down it is also going forward. I'm guessing it...

    Inner axle seals when re-gearing?

I’m going to be regearing my Jeep and wondering if you guys think I should do my front inner axle seals? Thinking while its all apart it only makes sense plus the Jeep is high mileage and the previous owner didn’t look after it very well. However, it isn’t leaking or appear to be leaking so...
