01' 4.0 clutch issue

Folks,
I have a 01' Sport that was having intermittent clutch problems. If I was shifting it would work properly. If I sat with the clutch pedal pushed down for any length of time the clutch would re-engage, and will not disengage until motor is shut off so the clutch pedal can be released. I checked the solenoid. Which seemed to be working properly. I figured it was most likely the throw out bearing. Dropped the trans which was a fight, and a story for a different day. Throw out bearing and fork look good. The clip that holds the fork had come off but was not rusted or broken..... Fingers on the pressure plate look good. Not sure what to do. Should I replace the clutch with a LUK kit since I'm already in there? Or just reattach the fork with the clip, reassemble, and hope for the best? Any advice would be appreciated!

Being as it's apart I'd install a Luk kit. But your original problem sounds like a leaky hydraulic clutch mechanism, either at the master or slave cylinders. If that's your problem, the master-slave clutch assembly is easily replaced, it's a bolt-in job that doesn't take long. It comes as a sealed assembly pre-filled with hydraulic fluid and pre-bled ready to install. It can be replaced in under an hour and under 30 minutes if you hustle a little.

I was having a problem with mine, where it would shift fine in the morning, then get worse until I would have to use a lot of force to get it into gear. I tried taking the slave cylinder off and completely push the rod in several times to try to bleed it, It helped but still had the problem. Ended up getting a new master and slave and replaced, and it shifts great now. Under pressure the seals inside the old one were leaking. So I'd recommend replacing yours. Also do the clutch since you already have the trans off.

It still sounds like the hydraulic clutch system. Keep in mind how you described it working ok until you hold the clutch pedal down for an extended period of time which instantly made me think hydraulic leak.

So I went ahead a swapped out the clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing. I almost have everything back together. But I can't seem to get the transfer case linkage hooked back up properly. I can't seem to find a step by step write up or video. I'm at a total loss here, and dead in the water at this point. Thanks for your help in advance.
