You could be correct. The little research I did said 2003 and up. I do know 2003 and 2004 used that odd shift boot and plate if I recall. Ill dig deeper and edit my add as needed.

I know the 05-06 are different due to the location of the hole in the center console for the NSG 370 which affected the 42 shifter. The little tab for the mounting screw is in a different spot. What I don't know is if the 97-04 are the same.
 
I have a 97-02 shifter here as well ill do some comparing
