I'm looking into mounting my 2m/70cm radio in my jeep (a Yaesu FTM-400DR.) Since the radio has a detached face, its not really suited to a high mount like the ARR mount. So I figured where the radio body will mount (on the back of the center console, above the rear drink holders.)

(also, for reference, my 2006 is a RHD model)

So looking at the radio face, I figured a good place would be one the upper edge of the center dash column. Basically above and to the right of the AC/heat registers. (to the left for your normal LHD people...) I discovered a RAM ball mount for the rear of face:

I was looking at getting a standard RAM base and short arm, but I saw the Rugged Ridge tray, and I thought, this already has a ball. Its centered, which is less than ideal, but then I noticed that the ball is 17mm!?!?

Does anyone know if a standard RAM arm can grip the 17mm on one end and the 1in on the other? Alternatively, has anyone seen an arm designed for 17mm and 1in at the same time?

Thanks. I’ll have to look. To be honest, I’ve used 1in RAM mounts for ~20 years or more, and never know there were other sizes. OTOH the issue with dual ball adapters, is it mean I need two arms, and potentially weakens the setup.

Maybe give them a call and see what they offer. The ends of the arms just pop off when loosened so they may have different sizes.

Great radio! I mounted one in my truck using a magnetic Schoshe (spelling??) mount on a seat post arm from Lido mounts. They also have a specific mount for this radio but I liked the idea of being able to put my phone on the mount too.

Here is a page for just the 400 (oops all Yaesu's):

For my wifes SUV, I used a combo of these parts and threaded the dash side to screw onto the dash using 8-32 screws.

I did the mars/cap mod on all of ours to work with my GMRS repeater.

Anyone in the IE/Ontario (So. Cal) area looking for a high level GMRS repeater emergency/casual use, PM me, I will get you the freqs and tones.

I looked at that Rugged Ridge tray with phone/gps mount and decided: (1) too flimsy; and (2) I didn't want to drill into my otherwise pristine center bezel to mount it.

So I made my own dashtop GPS mount that will accept either a 17mm or 1" RAM ball.

However, during that project I discovered and obtained a Panavise dash mount. I use it for my Garmin inReach, but it is drilled with the standard AMPS pattern so it will accept your Yaesu FTM-400DR face plate. All things considered, including product quality and ease of installation, it is well worth the price charged.

Did you attach that to the two center bezel top screws?
I'm working on a bracket for my Garmin and that looks about like what I had working on my mental drafting board
