I just acquired a 2001 Sport from an estate. The p.o. Was in the process of refurbishing the vehicle when he passed. Took it for a short drive and after about 10 miles, lost power and started bucking. Top speed 5 mph. Today I started it and let it idle for about 20 minutes to warm up. Got a cel P0138. Took temperatures before and after cats and outlets were about 200 degrees less than inlet. Does this sound like clogged cats?

Pull the O2 sensor in front of the cats and create an exhaust leak and see if it helps.

go ahead and order a master cylinder kit before you do this ! I drove mine less than 2 miles with the 02 sensors removed and melted the clutch line and most of the wire looming on the drier side ! luckily I was turning in my driveway when the pedal went to the floor.

Probably won’t try that. I should add that the odometer has 185,000 miles on it. I have found that when the rpm’s get to 3000 the engine starts sputtering and slowing down.

sounds like the way mine acted when the honeycomb in the cat let loose ! removing the 02 sensors did help me figure it out but like I said melted the clutch line. you could remove the 02 sensors and look down them to inspect your cats for being clogged or detaching from the inner pipe. You could also feel if you have good flow out of your tailpipe. after I replaced my cats I noticed a lot more pressure blowing out of the pipe.

Had a similar situation on my YJ. I thought it might be the cat undid the exhaust pipe and burnt some of the wiring harness. But it ended up being the cat so I did find the problem.

Order an endoscope and look through the top 02 holes ,you can see perfectly if it’s stopped up.

mine wasn't really stopped up but the honeycomb had came loose and wedged itself down in the pipe. I really dont know if you could tell it with a scope but worth a try. after I removed it I looked down and barely noticed it was further down than the other one.

The weather has warmed up enough to work on the Jeep so I pulled the oxygen sensors on the inlet to the pre cats. I rigged up a heat shield/deflector and started it up. There was no hesitation or bogging down up to 2500-3000 rpm so I’m thinking it is the catalytic converters. Should I also replace the rear cat?

I replaced all 3 of mine but might not of been necessary. there was a good deal last year and I got all 3 for like $250, I don't think they are available anywhere near that now.

The rear cat is a (clean up )cat it isn’t monitored , I would do the passenger floorboard a solid and eliminate it,

One of the pre cats was completely empty. The 3rd cat looks clogged. I had read an older post about removing the left fender to gain access to the bolts. It did save me a lot of time.
